Research Blog

Everything that we learned the previous week about advanced internet search, searching library catalogs and searching article databases was very helpful to me, not only for this class but for my other classes as well. I did not know about a lot of those search engines. I find the google scholar the most accurate and most informative of all, I got a lot of interesting articles on there about designing and architecture which were of great help to me for my other class. I also like the google books, a lot of books that I had to use for some of my classes, I found those books on google books. I learned a lot about internet search which will always be helpful whenever I have to do another research paper.

Research Blog 4

So far the annotated bibliography was the toughest, it took me quite some time to find some relevant articles about my topic and it was quite a lot of writing. I’m pretty sure it’s nothing compared to the writing of the first draft. I haven’t written many research papers before so I don’t really have a lot of strategies. I do know that if I want my draft to be good, I need to find some more sources which are focused on my topic. It was kinda hard to find some very specific sources, most of the sources were very broad. I would like to know where I could find some more specific sources.

Rsearch journal blog post

I did a search for my research topic using the CUNY +, I just searched for social media and I got about 3800 records. That’s a lot. Most of the Electronic Resource were not from City Tech, they were from CUNY. But the problem with the CUNY + is that most of the books are not very specific, they are more focused on the society and stuffs like that. I guess that’s because Social Media is a new thing. I ended up with more information when I used an internet search engined. It was clearer and the articles I found was much more interesting and helpful. One more issue with the books is that it’s way too long, it would be a waste of time to read the whole thing. I prefer internet searches better than the Library resource.

Research Proposal

I’ve encountered a few difficulties while trying to come up with my research proposal. The first difficulty was trying to focus on something relevant and to try to elaborate the topic clear enough. As the topic which I’ve chosen is like there are so many things to talk about it was hard to stay on track. I did not use any specific strategies. I just did some research on my topic to see if I would be able to write about 5-8 pages on it. One question I have is how many many idea or points should we have and how much to write on each?

Assignment 9: How search engines work?

How search engines work is not as simple as a lot of us thought it was. It’s a lot of work for those engineers to keep search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing etc.. updated. Some searches are updated every minutes, like the news or sports or something. But when you search something more specific; for example news on a soccer team, the searches are updated not so often. As it was mentioned in the article, 20% of the searches done everyday haven’t been searched for like 3 months so there’s a tough job for the engineers. They have to guess what the people will search every other day and that’s not easy at all. However, I do believe that there must be like a pattern or something which will help them in guessing those searches.

Assignment 8

Folksonomy: A Game of High-tech, this reading is focused on tags. It’s telling us the importance of tags and how tags can be really useful when you are doing a research or something. There are so many new stuffs being uploaded every second online, it’s hard for people to read everything. So tags can be very helpful when you are looking for an article or an information on something, however there are so many tags as well and when you type that article’s name or the information on major search engines like Google, there’ll be so many stuffs and it’s going to take some time before you find the right article or information. Therefore to ease things up and make your life a lot easier, del.icio.us comes into play. Where on Google you’ll find thousands of websites for the information you are looking for, del.icio.us will just give you much less results but they’ll be more accurate. The del.icio.us website can be very handy when you are looking for articles.

Assignment 7

The readings and the videos was very informative but I liked the second video better. It was fun and a lot easier to understand compare to the video “The Law is Strangling Creativity”. Copyright is becoming something huge as time goes by, as it was mentioned in the video, before the copyright owner had the rights for only 14 years, then it was increases and now the copyright owner has the rights for like forever. Before it was not such a big thing as it is now that’s because before the copyright owner did not make as much money as they are making now. I do agree with the fair use, movies like the “A Fair(y) Use Tale!” should have legal protection as it’s creative and it’s using only part of the movies and it’s showing a whole different thing compare to the original movies .

Online Privacy

The reading on online privacy was very interesting and I learned a lot of stuffs that I didn’t know about and never even heard of. It’s like the internet knows more stuffs on you than you know about yourself. They keep track of everything you’ve done, they know the exact month, day and time when you visited a website, that’s something you won’t even remember. I think that’s not cool at all, why should every single thing that you do on the internet should be monitored and stored? We, users of the internet should have more control on our online activities, the advertisers should not be allowed to take our personal information without us knowing.

Online Privacy? Does it even exist?

Dangerous Knowledge

The reading Politics of research was pretty hard to understand. So I did some research on Knowledge and I came across this video Dangerous Knowledge, it is a documentary about four  brilliant Mathematicians who were driven crazy by trying to prove their theories and eventually they all committed suicide. However, this video is just the first part of the documentary and it focuses mostly on Georg Cantor.

I hope you guys like it.

Love for labels

I found the reading of Love For Labels very interesting and I agree with what Serona Elton said about Record Companies. Record Companies are indeed a good thing for artists as they are professionals. They know how to market the singer, band etc.. in the right way, make them  get the attention they really need to get from the fans. Take a look at The Beatles for example, they achieve so much success and that’s all thanks to their Record Companies. If it wasn’t for the Record Companies who did the marketing for them, organizing shows and concerts no one would’ve known about The Beatles today. Can you Imagine the world without The Beatles???

I know some people may disagree with me but in my opinion for any artist the best way to promote himself is by signing for a Record Company.
