Assignment 4 – The Charms of Wikipedia

The videos are interesting, even though, the video on “social networking in plain English” is very simple. The reading on Wikipedia is incredible. I like reading and absorbing information from Wikipedia (I have to admit that I can’t help it, even when I know that it not a trustworthy source of information as anybody can participate and add information to it). The points cleared out by the article, “The Charms of Wikipedia” about how people watch over the information. They edit it, check it, add and even delete information from it everyday, which takes lots of time and commitment. Also, there are people who save information from deletion and frequently updating it. A large credit goes to the people who are watching over the information and the founders of Wikipedia. People can find information about almost anything on it and personally, I am addicted to it. Once, I start reading, I can’t stop. My advice is to read from it but also try to relate the information from other sources, just in case if you want to check the authenticity of the information.

Assignment 3 – Media in digital age.

The reading, “Media in digital age” by Pavlik, is pointing out that the advancement in media has given opportunities to a common man to come forward and be a part of it in spreading information, share thoughts and views. Now people are helping media by providing information to sites like yahoo, msn, etc. The examples are around us, whether it is 911 or recently passed hurricane Irene. People took videos with their cellphones, cameras or camcorders and posted online. This shows diversity in source of information. From person next door to a journalist, we are taking part in media.
People with talents are also using social networking sites like Facebook, youtube, tagged, and so many more to explore and to reach to other people. They don’t need big labels or big banners, to launch them (which costs money), to gain popularity. Rather than this, they have chosen fan following to make their own name and fame. They have worked from scratch to reach where they are now.

Assignment 2 – Media in the digital age

Both videos were short, quick but precise in explaining how to blog and utilize wiki to minimize workload and organize information. In this 21st century, blogging is widely accepted way of sharing information where people can read and edit them. Blogging also covers variety of information from inventions to personal information, from politics to tourism and it just doesn’t stop here. In my personal belief, blogging will increase in number day by day. The reading from “Media in digital age by Pavlik J.” is also interesting and informational. The media technology is growing by leaps and bounds. It can be seen in advertisements, web surfing, blogging or media messaging. I believe that accessing and manipulating information online is much easier now a days but the digital era has their pros and cons. The information spreads much faster using digital technology than spreading by newspapers but people have their own preferences, in choosing how they want to access it.

Assignment 1 – Research Strategies

After reading chapters 1 and 8 in Research Strategies by William Badke, I am impressed and I can say that my perception about writing research papers has been changed somewhat. Before, I used to google everything and used to read without even thinking that the information is genuine and from a reliable source or not. But after reading chapter 8, I can say that there are whole a lot of different ways in which we can research and effectively utilize the books, the World Wide Web, articles, journals etc. We can sharpen our intellects by understanding the information in a much better way. Also, in chapter 1, W. Badke has shown us the evolution of processing an information from traditional (where information was conveyed from one generation to the next by memorization and oral conversation) to the modern era (where the information is readily available via books, ebooks, articles, journals, cellphones, internet, media, and much more). Of course, all the information in those two chapters is really helpful, well written, and is explained in a humorous way.
