Today we watched an episode of Tedd Talk.  The speaker was a designer in the name of Marian Bantjes who explained to us how she built her career through something that she loved, which really inspired me because honestly im still very hesitant of being in this field.  My biggest fear would be trying to be a good at something and at the end it would just be a  DEAD END!!!

Marian Bantjes told us that she used to go by the rules. She used to follow strategy but now she just follows her instinct.  She follows her heart and her interest.  Which doesn’t always work (well at least for me) but for Marian she seems to be doing very well at it because this lead her design to be interesting and unique.  Whenever she works on a design she ask herself “does it bring joy? does it bring wonder? curiosity?”. i am intrigued by this ideology because when i design i usually deliver it when something looks presentable.  How i was taught was just was just getting the message across. Most of the time i dont have any feeling towards my design.

When she showed her example of the puzzle, She took pieces of letter forms and created these tile units that she placed together to create this very interesting design that at first looked like scribbles to me but she used it to create letters and words to make a pattern, it was puzzling but not impossible to read.   This was a very interesting concept because what shes trying to perceive is that design does not always have to be serious. It can very much be fun!

Marian also showed us how she worked with sugar to create letterform which i found it to be really cool! After watching that I tried to go home and play with sugar just to see what I could come up with and it wasn’t even close to what she showed my stuff looked like a bunch of doodles but it was relaxing and the texture was interesting as well. She basically is able to take things that we use in our everyday life and manipulates them for her benefit and comes up with these amazing designs which was super fascinating!

Marian taught us that design is all around us.  It sure does not have to be anyway difficult. It can be free and fun.  Her design is very unique and original because it’s a representation of her.  Her ideas, Her thoughts and her fascination.
