As we have discussed throughout the semester, the Albee Square Mall was replaced by City Point, which offers more upscale shopping opportunities to new residents and workers in Downtown Brooklyn and adjacent neighborhoods. However, while enjoying luxury shopping opportunities, we often forget the old community and its displacement. Are they still here? Are they gone? If they are gone, where did they go? As seen in My Brooklyn, Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE) organizes local residents to object to gentrification in Downtown Brooklyn, and fights for the original community, which comprised of mostly people of color.
In this activity, I am asking you to complete three things.
Draw your ideal Brooklyn with your group members. We’re doing this group activity on 05/09. I am sharing what my former students did, but please see they drew their ideal ‘city.’
