Ethnicity and authenticity in ethnic enclavesÂ
Ethnic enclaves: from traditional enclaves to new settlement patterns
This week, we will explore sociological understandings of ethnic enclaves since the 1965 Immigration Act with an influx of new immigrants to the United States, particularly from Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia; navigate a new insight on immigrants who did not fit into the dual labor market theory in the 60s; and discuss how sociologists had engaged with a debate on the ethnic enclave economy from the 70s to 90s.
Finally, we will discuss how recent scholars have paid attention to the emergence of new types of ethnic enclaves from ethnoburb to transclave. You will read my article on transclave this week!

When you read my article, please read the literature review very carefully in order to learn more about the ethnic enclave economy debate; and learn why and how recent scholars, including Wei Li and Jinwon Kim, have analyzed the emergence of new ethnic enclaves.
While we focus on the structural changes that have led the emergence of new ethnic enclaves, we will explore more examples of new ethnic enclaves by paying attention to ethnic food and authenticity in the next class.
