The New School Event: David Rockwell at the Parsons Table with Paul Goldberger
I went to this event at the auditorium in The New School. The event is free to the ticket, so the seating is available for people who first-come. Before I came to this event, I register the free ticket on The New School website. I also did some research about the designer. David Rockwell is an architectural designer and leads to work on projects include airport terminals, restaurant, hotels and museum exhibitions, etc. After I found out he is a professional celebrity on design area. I am curious and want to know more about his style of design might help me by learning to be a great designer.
After I came in the auditorium, I just find a seat in the front. I saw everybody was talking so I did talk a little bit with neighbors. Most of the people who go there are the students in this school. The event start from a host then we all invited David Rockwell and Paul Goldberger came to the stage. Basically, Paul Goldberger asks questions to David Rockwell about his projects. The audience was listening to their conversation and watch the projector when talking the project. We don’t have to ask a question, but Paul Goldberger does for the whole procession.
One of the questions I was really glad to hear is the restaurant project: Union Square Cafe. David talked about how the Rockwell group met inspiration from the old location. They have to consider solutions on every detail such as a ceiling, floor, light, table, bar, space, window and dining chair, etc. The Rockwell group responsible for all. The mission to a client is to define problems and develop a program. Moreover, Nobu Downtown is a well-known restaurant design by David Rockwell. He shows us an image of the place and specially introduce the columns design and discuss the design style. Even though I am not majoring in architecture, the functions they are taking I don’t understand. I am still glad to hear the Rockwell group design experience.
After listening to Rockwell introduce some of the great projects. Somebody asks questions by email: “How do find your parallel-feel inspires design?” I like Rockwell answer this question. For designing a restaurant, it related to many other things like cooking, cookbook, and food, etc. Don’t miss any little details something might inspire you anytime. I learned a lot from hearing his answers that how to be a successful designer.
