In the first crash course Computer science video, we were taken to the very beginning of computer history as they discussed the abacus (invented in mesopotamia around 2500 BCE), a calculator that could also store information like a hard drive would. There were also other devices that continued to grow in complexity as time went on like the astrolabe, the slide ruler, the step reckoner and clocks. This lesson made me realize all the very complex technology of computers we use on a daily basis today all come from very basic ideas that all led up to the “general computer” which doesn’t only perform one particular computation, it also had memory and a printer like the ones we have today. In the second video it discusses the more complex advancements of computers today and how it started to branch out. And I found it an interesting and a fun fact that we got the term “bug” from when they removed a dead moth from one of the large computer machines.
