Brand Name/ Producer: Saint Helena Winery
Region/AVA: Napa Valley
Vintage: 2012
Grape Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon (75% of the grapes are from the named variety; however, āCalifornia law requires that 100% of the grapes come from within California for any wine labeled with the appellation of origin California or a geographical subdivision of the stateā).
“Estate Bottled” on a wine bottle mean that the winery grew 100% of the grapes on land it owns or controls and that the winery crushed, fermented, finished, aged, and bottled the wine in a continuous process on the same property. Both the vineyard and winery must be located in the viticultural area that is stated on the label. (Retrieved from: https://napavintners.com/wines/how_to_read_a_wine_label.asp)
Malika, this is great information. You are correct that Napa Vintners has defines “Estate” and it is now defined by the TTB to mean what you wrote above. After looking into this myself I learned that the federal regulations changed and the term “Estate Bottled” does now indeed have a definition. After looking through government documents I still can not find when the regulation was changed, the last petition I found was in early 2011. The law now read: “100 percent of the wine came from grapes grown on land owned or controlled by the winery, which must be located in a viticultural area. The winery must crush and ferment the grapes and finish, age, and bottle the wine in a continuous process on their premises. The winery and the vineyard must be in the same viticultural area.” https://www.ttb.gov/appellation/index.shtml#definition
Great information.
