To-Do Before Class
- Purchase sketching and drafting supplies as listed in Course Resources ADDITION — you will need some method of measuring. This can be a free app for your phone, or a 12′ or 25′ tape measure.
- Submit all work due today to this Dropbox if you haven’t emailed it to me yet.
- Study the list of vocabulary terms below, and find an example of each in the Slides from class images, or images you find elsewhere. Using your images, be prepared to explain each term at our next class. Come to class with at least 1 question on a term you are not sure about:
- symmetry, local symmetry
- proportion, balance
- module, bay
- rhythm, repetition
- verticality, horizontality
- colonnade, fenestration, facade
- Sketching Assignment:
- Watch the Video we viewed in class, “Top 6 Architecture Sketching Techniques”
- Complete or redraw 1 of your sketches from last week, using sketching tips from the video and from our class discussion + practice
- Choose an object – coffee mug, etc. or table, or chair in your home or elsewhere, and sketch them. Make at least 2 sketches.
- Writing Assignment:
- Complete your Reflection Essay from the first day of class. Follow the Assignment instructions on Slide # 9, linked here.
- The slides #3-8 at the above link will also help you complete your essay.
- Your paper should be written using 11-point Ariel font on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Include a header in the upper left-hand corner of the paper with your name, date, course number (ARCH1101), professor’s name (Prof. Gernert), and assignment number (Assignment 1)

- From your sketches in class — and the dimensions that you recorded in your sketchbook — make the 3 drawings. (plan, front elevation + side elevation)
- Use this Scale: 3/4″ = 1′-0″

- All drawings shall be done on 11″x17″ paper.
- Use your parallel bar (or T-square) and triangle to make careful, accurate drawings.
- Bring your drawing to class. Bring all your supplies to class!

- Why is sketching important to you?
- Why is sketching important to the author of the article?
