Chapters 8-12 of Part II

When reading this section of the novel Tituba was bought by Jewish mister by the name of Benjamin Cohen. After Benjamin lost his wife he was in need of someone to take care of him and his children. Benjamin was in so much pain because of loosing his wife that Tituba asked him to if he wanted to speak to his wife that passed away. This stuck out to me because even though witch craft was considered an evil thing to the people during that time Tituba didn’t really care. She wanted to work her power to help comfort the sadness of Benjamin. I believe that she was open about helping him communicate with the dead because him being a Jew in a Christian society he was also kind of shunned down on. People looked at Jews as different because they didn’t follow the same culture as everyone else that is probably why Tituba was so open about her power to bring back Abigail to speak to Benjamin. I also don’t understand how Tituba says that why does why does any relationship with the slightest affection between man and woman have to end up in bed. But she’s sleeping with Benjamin and is okay with doing such even when she knows that he is still sad because of his wife’s death.

Throughout the reading there were several significant moments that really stood up to me. The most significant moment that really stood up to me was very shocking and intriguing.  A new character that goes by the name of Benjamin Cohen, a Jewish merchant is introduced in this chapter. Benjamin Cohen appears to have some similarities between Hester. Like Hester, Cohen has been persecuted but because of being Jewish. Al though they seem to share some common similarities they also differ themselves from both Hester and Tituba. Cohen, in the other hand seems to take the blame for his actions and commitment. Hester and Tituba they seem to view themselves as criminals. Due to the actions they commit and responsibility they have towards their commitment. Cohen believes that he is being punished for being unfaithful to God. It’s very intriguing and quite interesting on how a white male can be incorporated into the story. I find this quite strange it appears to me that Benjamin Cohen, a Jewish merchant is being oppressed. Oppression lurks between this section of the chapter.

what i found interesting in reading these few chapters is how tituba and the jew came along to having sex, i keep trying to figure out why and how did that scene even happen knowing that they back grounds are so different from each other, but i came to realize that they both was very vulnerable at the time, at the time tituba miss that love from a man and feeling that “love” that she gets from a man, she wasn’t really attracted to him, but she just imagine that he was john indianthat she misses so much and as far as the jew man he wanted to re kindle his love again by seeing his wife, and out of love and joy he had sex with tituba as a appreciation to his wife as if she was there, i find it interesting under the circumstances and the society they lived in, they would go that far. and every guy tituba comes across she loves them, but she want to say how weak of a man john indian is but she is not that far from him

Benjamin Cohen, a Jewish merchant is introduced in these chapters and it is important to note the similarities between him and Hester. Like Hester, Cohen has been persecuted but because of being Jewish. However, the difference between both Tituba and Hester is that Cohen, unlike them, puts blame on himself while they see themselves as victims. Cohen believes that he is being punished for being unfaithful to God. It is interesting to see a different dynamic as a white male being incorporated into the story that is also being oppressed.

It is also interesting to point out the racist Christian ship captain that would only agree to take Tituba to Barbados if she used her abilities to heal the sick and manipulate the winds to his needs. Hypocrisy is being shown through the actions and selfish desires of the ship captain.

Venice Golding- I, Tituba 8-12 part II

There were so many interesting points within this portion of reading. The significant moment however that stood out for me is the affair between Benjamin Cohen and Tituba. It started out very innocent as she was just there to help him and the children and take care of the house. She drew my attention when she said “why must any relationship with the slightest hint of affection between a man and a woman necessarily end up in bed?” this affair between them was very risky and had serious consequences as it spiraled into the death of Benjamin Cohen’s children. At one point Tituba mentioned that she would like her freedom and return to her beloved Barbados but Mr. Cohen dismissed it.  I thought this moment was significant as I would like to compare the relationship Tituba had with John Indian and the similarities of the one she shared with Benjamin Cohen. Tituba had given up all that she had and her freedom to be with John Indian. Against the warning of Mama Yaya and Abena her mother she followed her heart and went with John. After Benjamin Cohen’s children were killed in the fire and he and Tituba were being persecuted he proclaims that it must be God that is punishing him for not freeing Tituba and so he makes all the preparations and gives her her freedom, but Tituba insists she wants to stay with him and didn’t want to leave. Once again she has her freedom that she longed for yet in that moment she all she wanted to do was to stay with Benjamin Cohen even if it’s in bondage.
