Remember, you must be on time tomorrow to be counted present and able to participate in class. Bring a paper dictionary and be prepared to write.

For Monday:
Read “The Signing” (if you were not here Wednesday, get a copy from a classmate or ask me before class on Thursday) and ask three thinking questions about the story which you will share in class on Monday.

Thinking questions are things that cannot be looked up in the text. They are questions that can be discussed. Imagine you are the teacher and you are trying to come up with questions to encourage your class to talk about the story and discuss their thoughts about the characters and events.

Your questions will likely begin with words like “Why do you think…”

Class on Thursday, October 22nd is canceled. You can turn in your homework on Monday and we will discuss the chapter then as well.

Read Unit 4: Chapter 5 of Urban Reader for College Writers and be ready to discuss it in class on Thursday. Turn in your Zoom in on Vocabulary in class on Thursday as well.

Edit: Don’t forget, draft 2 of the “When Teenagers Work” article is due Monday.

• Make note of some of these choices and compare. (For instance, compare what both schools are serving on Wednesday this week.)
• Which school has a healthier selection?
• Which school do you think has a lower carbon footprint?
• What could one or both of these schools change to improve their students’ health and their impact on the environment?

• What foods do you serve and why?
• What healthy options does your school serve?
• Does your school have a low or high carbon footprint?
• Will the students actually eat the food you provide?
• Will the school be able to afford to provide the food you’re planning to serve?
• What challenges did you face in planning your lunches?

Write or type a document answering the first set of questions (comparing the schools), your lunch plan for a school week, and include answers to the second set of questions.

On Monday, you will present your menu to your classmates and turn all of this in.

If you did not turn in your vocabulary homework or Essay 2: Draft 2, which were due Wednesday, turn them in in class on Thursday.

Be sure you have read Unit 4: Chapter 4 of Urban Readers for College Writers and will be prepared to do a small project involving topics covered in the chapter during Thursday’s class.

Read Unit 4: Chapter 4 of Urban Readers for College Writers. Do the Zoom in on Vocabulary, due Wednesday. On Thursday, we will do some research on the topics in this chapter, so be prepared.

Wednesday, October 14th will be an in-class essay that will count for a midterm grade. Study up on what is expected on a CATW exam to prepare yourself.

After reading Unit 3: Chapter 1 of Urban Reader for College Writers, answer both of the following questions as a comment on this post:

According to the report “In order to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gasses, we must change the assumptions we have abut food, agriculture, and nutrition.”  What are some of our assumptions about these topics? What problems do these assumptions cause? How do you think we should change them, and why?

Be as detailed and as opinionated as you like. You may speak about a personal experience, or just discuss the idea in general.

Any late homework you have is due by this Wednesday. I will not accept late assignments from earlier in the semester after this Wednesday. Remember that, in addition to your attendance, the amount and quality of the homework you turn in determines whether or not you pass this class and whether or not you are recommended to take the CATW exam at the end of the semester.

On Thursday, you will have a vocabulary and grammar test. The vocabulary from any chapter we’ve discussed maybe be on the test. Any grammar we’ve covered in class may be on the test.

After reading Unit 1: Chapter 4 of Urban Reader for College Writers, answer both of the following questions as a comment on this post:

What is your reaction to neighborhood residents having decision-making power when it comes to traffic, noise, or business in their communities? What if not everyone in the community agrees?

and

What suggestions would you make to improve your neighborhood? Why would you change these things if you could?

Be as detailed and as opinionated as you like. You may speak about a personal experience, or just discuss the idea in general.

Only if you did not turn in your essay on time, you have additional homework. For those people who did not turn their paper in on time, read Unit 1/Ch 2 of your book and answer the Main Idea section, 1-3 and the Discuss This section 1-6. If you complete this and make a clear effort then you will not be penalized for having a late paper. Get your paper to me by Monday.

If you turned in your essay on time then this does not apply to you!

Find a news article related to civics, politics, or government (or, if you’re very interested, you can find something about another topic we’ve mentioned in class, such as vaccines and autism) and cut it out or print it.

Write a summary and response of this article to turn in with the copy of the article you cut out or printed on Thursday. If you prefer, you may structure what you turn in as a CATW-style essay, but this is not required.

Remember, there is no class on Tuesday or Wednesday. Friday is on a Tuesday schedule.
