To my understanding, a discourse community is a different way for a group of people to communicate with each other in a sense where it’s only understandable to those in that community with different goals and whatnot, similarly to speaking another language with someone in front of others who don’t have any understanding of what they are hearing. One important thing that makes a Discourse Community is what the niche is about, like the Perri Klass article about the language in the medical field being very confusing and the vocabulary being used which is completely incomprehensible to someone outside that community.

To my understanding, a discourse community is a group of people that alters their language. The key element that makes a discourse community is the agreement and understanding of what their words or phrases mean in regular English. Another thing is that these words are simplified was to communicate more complex ideas. Discourse communities are ways that people communicate in their own way.

Based on my interpretation of the article, a discourse community is a group of people bonded together in a specific setting, be it professionally, familial, or in another way, who’s members engage in a form of communication that diverges from the standard language. This secret communication can be verbal, written, or even nonverbal, perhaps using various hand gestures or facial expressions. The language used by the members of the group has been created specifically to be understood only by the members “in the know.” In essence, a discourse community is somewhat like a code.

From what I’ve gathered from the class discussions, a discourse community does not seem any different from just what a community is. To my understanding a “Discourse Community” is just a phrase that emphasizes the languages that are used in the community. Every community has their own goals and values and in turn, uses different language to more efficiently articulate ideas within their own group.

A discourse community is a group of people who share a common interest, goal, or professional field and communicate with one another using a specific set of language conventions and practices. Two key features are Common Goals or Interests: Members of a discourse community typically share common goals, interests, or objectives that unite them. Last but not least Communication Norms: There are established norms for communication within the community. This includes written and spoken communication, and members are expected to adhere to these norms.

I would describe a discourse community as a community of people who share common interests, objectives, environment, or culture, which gives rise to way of speaking that is not readily understood by outsiders.

The difference between a discourse community and a regular community is the use of language, which is not understood by those outside the community.

Discourse communities can be described as community groups with similar goals and interests and tend to develop their own specialized vocabulary, of which only those in said group would recognized the actual meaning of. An outsider for example wouldn’t understand something as simple as a “woodwind” while a musician would instantly be able to tell you that it is one of the families of instruments that include flutes and were exclusively made out of wood. Discourse communities are not only groups, but entire different languages as well.

According to my personal understanding a Discourse community is a group of people who share a similar/common interest. This could range from political topics to gaming. The key component of what makes a discourse community work is their understanding of the specific topic. This lead to new ideas and languages that are only known to them . for example a gaming discourse community would use certain terms that’s specific to their community. Unless you part of their community you won’t be able to understand them. In general discourse communities are platforms made for discussion and bringing forth new ideas/debates
