A discourse community refers to a group of people who share common goals, interest, and ways of communicating within a specific context or field of study. Understanding the concept of a discourse community can help writers better understand the expectation and requirements of writting assignments. For example, in academic writting, the discourse community may include professors, researches and studdents who engage in scholarly communication using specific formats, citation styles and language conventions.
