Gothic Spaces Presentation

For this project, we will create a YouTube channel for people interested in Gothic “spaces.” Each group will find a space (either virtual or in real life) that you think exhibits some of the Gothic elements we have discussed in class. Then you will create a short video featuring the “space,” describing the Gothic elements, analyzing the space in terms of at least one of the theoretical concepts discussed in class, and connecting the space to at least one of the literary texts we have read.

To prepare for this assignment, we will collaborate on a shared document listing all the “Gothic Characteristics and Theoretical Concepts” that we cover in class. You should add items throughout the semester, and you should use it as a resource as you prepare your video presentation.

Each group will complete the following tasks:

  • Decide on a virtual or in person space that you think has enough of the atmospheric and/or architectural elements to be considered Gothic.
  • Observe the space and take detailed notes (each group member should take at least one page of hand-written notes).
  • Create a 10-minute video that covers the following information in an informative, authoritative, and entertaining manner:
    • Name and location of the space
    • Images and/or video demonstrating the space
    • Description of its Gothic atmospheric and architectural characteristics
    • An analysis of the space in relation to at least one of the theoretical concepts we have covered
    • An analysis of the space in relation to at least one of the literary texts we have read
      • You must clearly describe the theoretical concept and provide quotes from at least one of the literary texts to support your analysis
  • Complete and post your video at least 24 hours before your presentation date
  • On your presentation date, briefly introduce yourself (names, group name, space chosen) to the class before we view it

Notes:

  • Make your video entertaining and as visually interesting as you can
  • On the day of your presentation, you will submit your observation notes AND a reflection essay for grading

Grading Breakdown (out of 200 points):

  • Group Items:
    • 150 Points: Presentation (introduction + video screening)
  • Individual Items:
    • 20 Points: Observation notes, 1 page minimum
    • 30 Points: Short reflective essay (250 words, minimum) describing your personal role in the project. What did you contribute? Is there anything you think I need to know about the group process and individual member contributions? What was the most challenging part of the project and what was the most rewarding part?
