Since we are the Generation Z born in the social and technological advanced age being constantly surrounded by many social networks, so it becomes quite important for us to understand the social media that surrounds us and how it impacts our lives. I still remember when I first began using Instagram at 11, I could sense changes in me. I realised that I had become a victim of stress, anxiety, and depression every now and then and had moments when I didnā€™t feel like doing anything or just felt immensely miserably. I could hardly understand the reasons for my growing stress and insecurities and let myself thought that Iā€™m not good enough. And Iā€™m sure that we all feel this way at some point in our lives and very few manages to take control of their lives. Over the years social media has evolved unimaginably and has become a significant part of our daily lives. So, I figured out that I want to understand how does social media affect our society. I want to understand the ways in which it contributes to our physical and virtual world. Through this project I want to find the answers of ā€œIs social media good or badā€, ā€œIs social media making us unsocialā€ and ā€œIs abandoning social media the solution?ā€. I intended to educate people from young teens to senior adults because such information can benefit us all. But I specially want to focus on young adults as they are more vulnerable and are not critical thinkers. I first surfed the internet and went through few articles. I came to know that overall YouTube and Facebook are widely used while use of Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok is especially common among adults under 30. Ā I learned that young adults especially women are the earliest social media adopters and their frequency of usage is more often. Billions of people use social networks for different reasons such as communication, entertainment, news, jobs hiring, businesses, to show their work or talent, etc. Social media has been instrumental for the raising the issue of #Blacklivesmatter but it also infamous for 2021 Unites States Capitol attack. The dark side of social media shows that it is responsible for cyber bullying, trolling, fraud, and harassment. It negatively affects both their physical and mental health and in worse cases causes death. Other concerns include data leaks, easy tool for running fake propaganda or spreading false rumours. So, thereā€™s no wonder that it has a huge impact on our lives both positively and destructively. But I couldnā€™t come to certain conclusion if social media is good or bad even after a brief study of pros and cons of social media. To me they seem to balance each other. While looking for a genre, I watched few videos on YouTube and came across a TED Talk by a normal adolescent girl probably the same age as me. She quoted ā€œsocial media isn’t so dark. In reality, it has become a reflection of our darker sideā€ and ā€œthese machines are producing output based on what we input.ā€ From the talk I learned that we tend to put the blame on social media for our failures and fears. We refuse to take the responsibility to bring positive change in us. My research ended with the conclusion that social media has become an irreplaceable part of our society and it contribute to in almost all the fields. Now Iā€™m convinced that it is a tool not created to harm us but to connect us. And social media shouldnā€™t be blamed for our actions and that we should be conscious to follow credible sources and positive influencers.

Living in the digital era, I feel that social media is almost omnipresent. Despite being a convenient tool for communication, education, news and entertainment, I often find myself having second thoughts about abandoning social media. But I realised that it is possible but it will make my life difficult in many ways. Being surrounded by gadgets and internet driven life gives us the liberty to learn and connect to a sea of infinite information. No matter how much we criticise that social media are a major distraction, addictive, false news spreading source and causing riots and more. We are constantly on it for long hours. So, I chose this topic to understand the impact of social media on our society and what we as individuals can do. As social media is a contemporary subject of great importance understanding it will help my audience who are adolescents and adults. For my research I began with reading few articles and the information provided me with obvious results, the already known facts. But I learned which are the widely used platforms and studied the usersā€™ demographics depending on age, gender, educational background, etc. While working I had little trouble over deciding the genre which would best reach my audience. I planned to write a short article describing the pros and cons of social media for my audience to have a clearer picture of both sides. But such information about social media, in my opinion, is already well known and self- explanatory. But still, I will write an article. I shifted to also giving my audience the solution through a short and persuasive TED talk video which I strongly believe will make the audience think that social media is a tool to connect and not to disconnect. People will agree that we have been looking with wrong perception and will use social media for the purpose it was designed and not to harm others or to spread hate or misinformation. I believe that showing a video will be more interactive to hold the interest of people. I initially planned to focus on mostly the impact of social media on society which mostly deals with the problems but later decided to also include a solution. I learned that simply by being more responsible and consciously following only credible sources we can together bring a BIG change. Social media has proved to be a game changer and it is difficult to fathom a world without it and now that it is our reality, we have to learn to live with it. At the end I feel very content with my research and I got the answers to my many doubts that I donā€™t have to give up social media. In fact, we all donā€™t have to. All is needed is to surround myself with positive influencers, filter out the negativity and manage our time well. I learned not to let social media take control over me and decided to restrict my online activity in a productive manner and not follow anything blindly. And lastly, I found this quote to describe my mood that, ā€œDonā€™t use social media to impress; use it to impact people.ā€

Unit 1 Revise

Ā  Ā  Ā  My earliest impression of schooling and education is quite unpleasant. I always had to struggle throughout my school because I was less attentive and more distracted. I attended a summer school in my 3rd grade. Sometimes I felt I wasnā€™t getting anything what was being taught daily. Sometimes I felt alone and overwhelmed with my low grades. I wasnā€™t good in studies and never really was able to focus. I never want to miss my summer again. I already disliked the school and to do it in the summer had me more stressed. Soon I left that school partially because I disliked the teaching methods and partially because I wasnā€™t too keen.

I felt disappointed and started to look low at myself. I acted like Iā€™m strong, can handle the changing situations even though I know I was terrible. So, I kept myself tangled with irresponsible nature and let my mind wander to meaningless things and habits. It wasnā€™t that I wouldnā€™t get the concepts taught, I was not so willing or say determined.

And then it happened. I made progress slowly and steadily. At 7:57am I entered my school building on one sunny cold day in my 8th grade. I said good morning to the secretary whom I met on my way to the school auditorium. I waited there to be called upstairs for classes. The day looked usual and I too was my usual sneaking in my phone, without getting noticed, as the classes didnā€™t start until 8:05am. The principal and dean were strict about using phones and especially strict on me as I was one of those kids who was always targeted for not obeying the rules. Then I made my way towards my class. I thought to myself that getting average passing marks is all I need to be promoted to the higher class. At that time, I was giving multiple tests for high school and also the most dreaded by me ā€œSATSā€. I used to be up day and night as studying was hard for me. These chains of thoughts were running in my mind while I was physically in the class. I was leaving for lunch with my friends after my first three classes of the day. The principal had put the honor roll students list on the bulletin board outside the main office. And then, I stopped. That was real. My name flashed on the honor roll list. I remember walking past to it in 6th and 7th grade as I never really cared about the honor roll. As long I was passing that was fine to me.

But that 8th grade year I hit the honor roll. It totally made me view my education differently and gave me more of a motive to strive and do better. I went home and gave the big news to my parents. My family and friends were proud of me and that really made me feel special on that day. I have heard stories of dropping out for whatever circumstances from older relative friends. That did impact my psychology and made me put less efforts on my education. But I know my situation wasnā€™t that bad. I thank my parents for getting me up every day. My father always quoted Abraham Lincoln ā€“ ā€œthe best way to predict your future is to createā€. This still resonates in my mind. I understand that I donā€™t have to be good in everything. I just needed to be more mature and responsible.

I realized that itā€™s all a matter of choices and education just show us the right roadmap to lead a successful life. It is not something to be scared of, it simply a test of our abilities. I need not always get good grades but should also not desert myself from learning as it is a never-ending process. It is not just grades, honor rolls or endless assignments. It is way up and beyond. Education has definitely made me who Iā€™m today, ā€˜my better versionā€™. It gave me discipline and boosted my skills and awareness about our surroundings. It opens the world to me in my little head.

Final reflection

Ā Ā  Ā  Throughout this semester I think I had improved my reading and writing. I may not have been very constant with my work but I believe I have learned a few good lessons and this semester overall had been quite fruitful to me. As a reader I have learnt that reading is the first basic stage that makes us familiar with a plethora of information. The more we read the better we get at different ideas. Reading enhances our vocabulary, communication skills and knowledge. And as we gain knowledge by reading, we understand how things work, we start to question How? and Why? As a good reader now I process my ideas and information deeply. I think and rethink and have become a critical thinker. Reading has significantly broadened my views and knowledge in addition to improving vocabulary.

Ā  Ā  Ā  Initially I thought that writing was not my cup of tea because I am into sports and fun filled activities more. But as I had to work on different assignment my early perception of myself about writing has slightly changed. Now I feel I have improved and get to know myself and others better through simple writing and understanding the meaning attached to certain ideas and understanding why. Writing is like testing what you have learned so far or how much do we know about something. Writing reflects our thought process and also the efforts we put. When I write I try to keep the content in sync and easily understandable. I make sure that I include the important points in good detail and the content makes sense and looks complete. As a writer I have made quite a progress but I still needs to work upon my grammar and vocabulary to be better at it and also doing some good research.

I have learned the importance of time management and how to prioritize things. It helps to deal with unnecessary stress and anxiety. I have learned the importance of revision to improve our quality and reduce our mistakes to be a better version of ourselves. As a scholar I have learnt to continue to strive for better and higher.

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  The knowledge and experience that I had gained this semester will definitely help me in one way or the other. This semester has taught me how to look into things in a deep and meaningful manner and analyse. It not only gave me new knowledge but also taught me other skills like time management, coping with stress and importance of good research for making our writing informative and impressive. I have learned the importance of revision, artist statement and how it reduces our mistakes and improves our overall writing process. And how focus and consistency help us to achieve our goal. At the beginning of the semester we were just getting the feel of writing, we began writing off by annotating a lot and thinking deeply into scenearios to become better writers and critical thinkers. Then coming to the end of the semester to revising work, brainstorming previous work and wrapping up with the final reflection for the semester. I have tried to keep up the momentum and I believe I have become better and myself at writing and expressing.

Ā  Ā  Ā  As Iā€™m going back breezing over my writing over this semester I had found one of my drafts useful to now add this to my reflection, As I quoted from the text ā€œMost people think that the principal problem is that writers are too proud of what they have written. Actually, a greater problem for most professional writers is one shared by the majority of students. They are overly critical, think everything is dreadful, tear up page after page, never complete a draft, see the task as hopeless.ā€ The meaning of this wound beĀ  the writer must learn and value oneā€™s writing and form of portraying. ButĀ  writers must never give up and think that the task is always possible. A side note, is I always take breaks when Iā€™m writing. Once youā€™re tired of writing, take a break and come back when your mind and eyes have been refreshed.

Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Another fun fact and topic I enjoyed was ā€œSchools are killing Curiosityā€ as stated in the text ā€œWhen you visit schools in many parts of the world it can be difficult to remember they are full of active, intellectual children because no one is talking about their inner mental lives. How well they behave, and how they perform seem much more important to many people in the educational communities. Often educational bureaucracies have shunted curiosity to the side.ā€This quote explains our mental lives as students are suppressed and this correlates with our curiosity, I feel like curiosity is one of the most important foundations of one’s life. How can a person stop being curious about something, there’s always so much more we can learn about. Let’s look at a group of students who go above in beyond with their thoughts and not how well they look put together.

Ā  Ā  A great assumption I had mentioned in my incomplete unit 3 assignment was ā€œI donā€™t want to project a short movie or any motivational speech as such. Instead, I think of having an informal discussion once a year in institutions where people openly express the challenges faced and share their experiences. We can get a chance to listen the first-hand stories and learn from them. This will help, not just them but all, to be more confident, compassionate and considerate of other people. This way our society can work together well and be more understanding about peopleā€™s sufferings. And no matter which field we choose to pursue in life later, mental health is something which we cannot afford to ignore and need to focus constantly throughout our lives.ā€ I feel like we donā€™t need any doctor to fight our inner battles, it is just that we donā€™t have to give up on ourselves and continue to live up. A lot of people may see life or get hit with life very different and very tough, some people get depressed and fall into the hole and on the otherĀ  some people mangeā€™s to hide what they go through and push forward and donā€™t show it.

Final Reflection SFD

Q1 Throughout this semester I think I had improved my reading and writing.

Initially I thought that writing was not my cup of tea because I am into sports and fun filled activities more.

As a scholar I have learned a lot. From reading and annotating different writers works to self- introspection and brainstorming our own research genre topics. I have learned how to continuously connect with our work and improve as we move forward. Being a procrastinator, it is often hard for me to stay focused and consistent. I have learned the importance of time management and how to prioritize things. It helps to deal with unnecessary stress and anxiety. I have learned the importance of revision to improve our quality and reduce our mistakes to be a better version of ourselves. As a scholar I have learnt to continue to strive for better and higher.

Q2 The knowledge and experience that I had gained this semester will definitely help me in one way or the other.

Q3 At the beginning of the semester we were just getting the feel of writing, we began writing off by annotating a lot and thinking deeply into scenearios to become better writers and critical thinkers. Then coming to the end of the semester to revising work, brainstorming previous work and wrapping up with the final reflection for the semester. I have tried to keep up the momentum and I believe I have become better and improved myself at writing and expressing.

Q4 My least favorite assignment was unit 2 RAB because over the days doing that assignment I was very overwhelmed having to get the minimum of about 2,000 words and in the correct way professor wanted. I particularly liked doing ‘The maker’ s eye’. The name itself is unique and striking. The quotes ‘writing is rewriting’ and ‘writing is a never ending process’ still resonate in my mind. It taught me how writing can be more powerful and the manner can influence people greatly.

Q5 I think the important lesson that I have learned is that one should know what they are doing and what they want to do. So that we have a clarity of ideas and we donā€™t get confused. Because when we donā€™t know what we are doing it is easy to get annoyed and we tend to give up. I realised the importance of self-introspection to understand our opinions. It is easy for me to work on some topic that the professor assigns but when it comes to choosing our own topic, I find it difficult because there is so much information and topics and I just get messed up. So the thought process matters and also managing time well meeting the deadlines.

Q6 As the genre and assignments changed, I get familiar with new information and how to think in a certain manner I get our answers. I got impressed by how one thing can have multiple roadmaps,

many answers and ways of expression. I think I have improved my reading, thinking and writing. I have learned new words and how to frame or arrange our ideas for the final work to make it easy for readers to understand us. I got better in understanding different meanings or style of writing as we move to different genres.

Q7 Breaking down the task for my readers, making the elements of the task clear. Gathering enough information helped me analyze all outcomes. I generally start with understanding the aim of the task like what it basically is asking. Then I tried to narrow down the things that I will be talking about and then being elaborate so that the final piece looks cohesive.

Q8 My few worries were what reader I wanted to read my work and that somewhat had me stuck trying to figure out which type of genre will I be writing. Understanding the things that I want to explain and write took me time to figure out.

I have never considered myself well in writing but I try to do better at each attempt. My beliefs have changed as I work and learn more and more.

Q9 I haven’t revised an assignment yet I am currently working on it, but last week we sort of went back to revised an assignment we did in the beginning of the semester called “time capsule” in class to see what changed? what we achieved? and what we learned, so i fairly got the feel of revision and with the addition of me currently working on on. I know revision improves the quality of work so I will try to do it more often in future. It kind of give us a reflection of our mistakes and the scope of improvement which I think we all need.

Q10 I find writing essays challenging. Because there is so much information that I find it difficult how to begin with, what all things I should talk about and what to avoid. Also writing lengthy essay can be a bit tricky and exhausting. I tried to overcome this by first understanding the topic then thinking of few key point and making a rough draft. I try to research and read more to write better.
