The research question is what is the difference between epilepsy and seizure ? I think that an epilepsy would consider someone with a certain disease in the brain. I feel that it would be important to know because some children who have epilepsy wont affect their ability to learn or achieve their goals academically but some might be in titled to extra time or support in class. It can cause children to lose some important points during the time they are being taught. I know that the electrical activity occurs between neurons or the brain cells in an infants brain. It can happen for several reasons. In the text it says “Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases and affects people of all ages, races, social classes, and geographical locations. Epilepsy is a disease of the brain characterized by an enduring predisposition to generate seizures and by the neurologic, cognitive, psychological, and social consequences of seizure recurrences”. It usually affects a lot of people over the course of the year. “According to the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), epilepsy is defined by any of the following conditions: (1) at least 2 unprovoked (or reflex) seizures occurring >24 h apart; (2) one unprovoked (or reflex) seizure and a probability of further seizures similar to the general recurrence risk (at least 60%) after 2 unprovoked seizures, occurring over the next 10 years; and (3) diagnosis of an epilepsy syndrome”. What is an unprovoked seizure and what does it include? An unprovoked seizure is a seizure occurring in the absence of precipitating factors. Unprovoked seizures include events occurring in the absence of recognized etiological or risk factors (idiopathic and cryptogenic seizures), in patients with antecedent stable (non progressing) CNS insults (remote symptomatic seizures), or in those with progressive CNS abnormalities, like brain tumors or degenerative conditions (progressive symptomatic seizures).” The risks of seizures were fair based on research. “he risk of relapse after a first unprovoked seizure in population-based studies was fairly consistent with 36–37% rates at 1 year and 43–45% rates at 2 years”. Why is an epilepsy an important cause? I think it would be an important cause because it gives the significant number of cases and the affects. It may expected to certain existing treatments. “Sizable gains in reducing the burden of epilepsy might be expected from improved access to existing treatments in low-income countries and from the development of new effective drugs worldwide”. It also states “epilepsy is still an important cause of disability and mortality. If applied to epidemiological studies, the change in the definition of epilepsy, which now includes a significant number of cases with single unprovoked seizures, will affect incidence, prevalence, and mortality of epilepsy in the future.” In other words, It tells you the importance of the cause.
