For today’s class, you read the second chapter and digression from Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows. During the first ten minutes of class, write a brief summary of what you read. What was the main point of this chapter (the chapter’s thesis/unity of thought), and how does its point connect to what you see as the book’s overall thesis/unity of thought? Assignment #2

My career in sport medicine

My name is Marc Larose, I am eighteen years old, and I am a freshman at  New York City College of Technology (City Tech). My major is computer science (CST), I have always had an interest in computers. However, I also love sports particularly soccer, which made me develop an interest in Sport Medicine. Now, I am thinking of switching my major from CST to chemical Technology (LAS) with a goal of becoming a sport doctor. Sport Medicine is the best career for me, because I love to help people. It will be a great opportunity for me to work with athletes and I enjoy working with people. In the upcoming paragraphs, I will provide background information about my major, I will discuss the reason behind me choosing this major and I will explain how I plan on being the best in what I do.

Unfortunately, there’s no sport medicine major at City Tech which means that I need to major  in either Chemical Technology at City tech, or transfer to Brooklyn College or Hunter and enroll in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program  in Sports Medicine. It is better if I wait until I get my associate degree in the LAS program before I transfer to another school. If I transfer before I get my degree there is a high chance I will have to take some classes over because each school has different curriculum for each major, meaning some credit will not be validated in the other school. Changing major is not as easy as most people think neither is transferring to another school. It’s basically applying to college all over again but only fewer steps .The process is also faster.

When I transfer to Brooklyn college after earning my associate degree in City Tech , It will take me another two year to earn my Bachelor degree.  After four long years, I will take a test called Medical college admissions test (MCAT) to get into medical school. MCAT is to college students what SAT is to college students. When I pass the MCAT exam ,I can either attend an allopathic medical school to become a medical Doctor (M.D) degree or attend an osteopathic medical school to become a doctor of Osteopathic medicine (D.O). The main difference between these programs is that osteopathic programs place extra emphasis on the musculoskeletal system and preventative medicine. Then I will have to take an exam for allopathic physicians also known as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam (COMLEX). Then I will have to complete a residency in a primary care and lastly a fellowship by getting either exam for allopathic physicians is known as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), while the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam (COMLEX). It will take me an amount of eight to ten years to become a sport doctor.

Most people think sport doctor is only responsible for telling  how long the will not be able to play for but acording to my research, Sports medicine focuses on helping people improve their athletic performance, recover from injury and prevent future injuries. It is a fast-growing health care field, because health workers who specialize in sports medicine can also help many “regular” people as well as athletes. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to seek help from a sports medicine professional. Sports medicine professionals treat people who participate in sports just for fun or want to get better results from their exercise program, patients who suffered injuries and want to regain full function, and people who have disabilities and want to increase their mobility and capabilities. It is a fast growing career that has grown by 18% percent since 2014.An article name “History of sport medicine in east European countries” says sport medicine has been there as early as the 19^th century but it is now getting more recognition because of the tremendous growth in the sport world. It also says sport medicine is known more in European countries.

As I study sport medicine, I will be learning how to help people with injuries but mainly athletes. I have many options after graduating with this degree I could be:  a physical therapist, a Nurse or an athletic trainer, or a medical doctor specializing in osteopathy. Whatever I choose from what I listed will depends on my career goal, my educational goal and the environment I want to work in. The kind of education I am getting at City Tech and the other school I will be part of. I want to transform it into a long term career.

I have always wanted to be a professional soccer player but unfortunately, I need a day job. I have always wanted to be involved in the sport world in general but preferably soccer. Since I cannot make it as a soccer player I want to be a sport doctor supporting soccer player. When a player gets injured I would provide them the help they need to keep pursuing their dream. When a player gets injured and they think their career is over, I will be one of the main people that will help them get better with their injury to get back on the field and do what they do. It will be an honor for me to work with the next Lebron james or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Zora Neale Hurston is an American folklorist, anthropologist, and author who write in “Their eyes were watching God” said “There are years that ask questions and years that answer” (Hurston 21). When I was applying for college it was a constant battle choosing between Computer science or sport medicine.  While it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up, I now know what I want to be a sport doctor .Furthermore I intend to be the best at what I do because I always aim for the best. Certain people do not believe I have what it takes to be a sport doctor because there’s so much steps to become one. Their uncertainty towards me is what will make me keep going when I feel like giving up.

In conclusion, Sport medicine is the right career for me because I chose it based on my passion for sport not because I had to choose a career. I spent my whole life playing sports. Any sport is about a team which is a group of people working together to achieve a main goal. Sport medicine is similar, it is a group of doctors working together to achieve a goal, make our patience better. Just like a team we each will have out part to play to attend our final goal. Therefore, I will be driven to be the best at it and I will also enjoy it because most of the time I will be working with people I look up to. One thing I learn growing up it is if you do not pursue your dream someone will hire you to build theirs

My Name is Brandon Richardson. I am Nineteen years old and I attend the college known as New York City College Of Technology. The name of the degree that I am going for is a bachelors in Radiology And Medical Tech Imaging. I believe that with all the knowledge that I will gain within the classes I take throughout my college career I will see to be ready to pursue also my masters within Radiology and Medical Tech Imaging in graduate school. I have always felt a huge passion of wanting to be a doctor but yet again also try and be into the topic of technology at the same time. The reason for that is because I am very intelligent in the field of computers and technology but however I do have a dream of being a doctor and when you put that together with the fact that Radiology has to do with scanning the body and MRI’s and etc, It combines both those subjects together. Technology is something that is needed everywhere but especially with hospitals. Ever since I was young the dream of me wanting to be a doctor was something that was so surreal to me that I would think about it almost every year growing up and then when I started working at hospitals and volunteering at hospitals, It strengthened my love for wanting to be a doctor. There are multiple reasons why I want to be a radiologist but the main 3 reasons are because I have a dream of being a doctor, also because I want to help people to live more healthier and stronger and somehow someway go about life in a better way & by being a radiologist I believe you can do that. My last reason is because of my love for technology plus my combined love for wanting to be a doctor which goes into the placement of being a radiologist. In the future I do plan on going to medical school after getting my masters and bachelors within my major and have the skill set to be a radiologist and for me to achieve my dream.

Now your probably thinking to yourself, “Well what could being a radiologist possibly do to make the world a better place or better yet, WHAT IS A RADIOLOGIST?” Well a radiologist first of all is a medical doctor that is specialized in treating both a disease and an injury by using Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). An MRI is a technique used by radiologist to use magnetic fields and radio waves in order to create an image on a screen of bones, organs & tissues in the body. Now for people who watch sports, when a person gets injured anywhere in the body they have go to a radiologist in order to check what happened to the place in the body where the injury occurred. Multiple injuries can happen at once so what the radiologist does is scan the body and see what is possibly broken in their body and what it bothering the person. This also can apply to diseases because the MRI also has the ability to form a image of the body and the disease that is inside the person, For example a radiologist can also check and see if a person has cancer based of a MRI scan of the body. It is something that Is very useful because most people may not realize or know that they have cancer until it is to late and the fact that you can check and process what is happening within your body and what is wrong in your body and how you can possibly heal it is an amazing thing to me.

As I said in the first paragraph, I do have a dream of being a doctor and ever since I was about the age of 6 when I first went into a hospital, I noticed so many things that sparked my attention. From the people that have multiple jobs within pretty much helping other people of different ages and different sickness or health issues was something that really made me understand that one person can truthfully change your life and make it for the better if they learn from their mistakes and get treated at a hospital. For example if someone gets a bad disease and goes to a hospital they can not only get help and get treated for what happened to them, they can also learn a valuable lesson that life is only short if you make it short. You can live to have a healthy life and live to have a even stronger lifespan if you treat your body right and also know the rights and wrongs of things you shouldn’t do against your body. Like how smoking and alcohol can really effect someone’s life is something so vital & some people don’t even come back from that. So at the time I didn’t know what radiology was nor did I know about any of the positions in a hospital at that. However though the things that grabbed me in a hospital was that you can make someone’s life better by instantly curing them and also just showing them that there are various things in the world that can shorten your life but if you take care of yourself you can live for as long as you allow yourself to live. According to the article “Why would anyone choose to be a doctor” by Danielle Ofri, she says this quote that “If I’m having a really rotten day in clinic, all I need is one of these new medical students to pop in, even if they make a long day even longer. The fact that medicine is still compelling enough for 17,000 people each year to commit a decade or more of their life to training is inspirational”. It shows that people really want to learn how to help others by creating all these new types of medicines to help others live better lives & people want to commit to doing so which is an amazing thing to me.

This brings me to my second huge reason why I want to be a radiologist and that is to help people live to have a better life and to make better decisions to have a more healthy life. You see people come in and out of hospitals these days whether it’s checking to see if they have a disease or if something very dangerous and life threatening happened to them or if their just coming to check on their daily check up’s to see how they are doing and if they need medicine for whatever particular reason. It’s always a reason for someone to be heading to the hospital. Now what they do after they leave the hospital is where the problem may be at. Like if a person has multiple sex partners for example and feel as if they get a STD test that maybe that’ll change them having multiple sex partners if they are positive in any disease and they find out that they’re negative, that can either change them to take more risks or to just completely stop having unprotected sex. I believe that some people come to doctors to be checked out but however I think doctors should also inspire people to just take care of themselves in a better way and to live more positively throughout their lives. Even when being a radiologist and going back to my point of scanning the bodies of athletes when they get injured or serious injuries that can effect there season or better yet career. They should also let them know that they should be more careful and be aware of the dire situations that a person can go through. Some people can change by meeting the right doctors who actually care about their health and not doing it just for the money and that goes for any patient meeting a doctor. I believe if you can change someone mentally you can change them physically and with that being said it’s almost like as if a doctor can be a psychologist in a way but also a doctor at the same time by just helping them to show that you can live a better life if you stop doing things to hurt your body in a way. I believe if you can help the world or the person in front of you in any way to live a better and healthy life then that’s one of the biggest accomplishments a person can achieve. It’s like saving a life pretty much.

My final reason for wanting to be a major in radiology and medical tech imaging and be a radiologist is because of my love for technology combined with my love of being  a doctor. According to the article “How much do radiologist make a year for entry level” by forest time and demand media, the average radiologist on their first year starts making between $330,000-$350,000 on their first year and then they gain even more money along the years with the more experience that they achieve. The money thing is just one little point of why I want to be a radiologist but it furthers my point however how much I know I would love being a radiologist because how much technology is so vital to my life and how also being a doctor is vital to me and when you combine that to make a radiologist and also include how much pay you get a year. It’s a huge boost of motivation to keep going in the path of being in a radiology major. I have always loved technology. No matter if it was even computers or phones or even devices that would improve something like a HDMI cord for example that makes a TV more high definition, It would always fascinate me on how much technology can be so effective in this day and age and that everyone needs it. Like why some people can take the stairs for example when there is a elevator powered by technology or an escalator that is powered by technology. There are so many things technology can do to help the world and it’s something that always made me want to know my knowledge on electronics and devices made in this day in age. So when you realize that radiology has to do with MRI’s and scanning the body which I find to be simply amazing based off the power in technology to check someone’s body, it instantly clicked to me that I want to be a radiologist and learn more things about the power of MRI’s and other things pertaining to radiology and how it is used. Hospitals without technology these days I think would be very difficult to sustain because how much technology has improved along the years and how effective it is to discover new things.

So in the future as I stated before, I want to go on further to get a masters in radiology and medical tech imaging. However though I know it won’t happen at the blink of an eye. Some people need years and years and years of training and school and knowledge in order to be that of a doctor or in my case a radiologist. A person has to be able to sacrifice at least 10 years of their life including college in order to complete the path of being a doctor or a radiologist depending on which doctor you want to be. I look at the path of it and it still is something that you can either conquer or let it conquer you. I say that because it takes a lot to want to be a doctor and want to save lives. You have to be nothing but dedicated and have a love and passion for it just how you would anything else that you want to be in life. So with that being said in the future I will sustain that of confidence and knowledge and drive and motivation to move further throughout the years of being in college and medical school to get to where I want to be and that’s being a doctor. When you have a love for something, that should also come with a drive to always complete your goal no matter the obstacle. After I finish medical school and finish college and achieve my Masters & Bachelors & Doctoral degrees it will show how much drive I truly had for the start of being a radiologist and helping the world from there

My name is Sasha; I am a student at City Tech. I am very passionate with the major and future career path I have chosen. The major I have chosen is Fashion Marketing. Fashion Marketing is the best career for me because it brings my creativity and drive   to take control, while overcoming challenges such as ones in the fashion and business world. Fashion brings out my artistry and Marketing brings out my competitiveness and ability of persuasion out. In this essay, I will explain my reasons for choosing this major, and more about how I plan to excel in my major and future career.

First, I’ll take you inside the Fashion Business world. Because I have an eye for fashion and a mind for business, fashion marketing was the best of both worlds for me when it came down to choosing a major for my future. To start, what is Fashion Marketing? Someone in Fashion Marketing is known as a fashion marketer or a fashion marketing manager. A Fashion Marketing Manager is a professional that focuses on publicizing and increasing awareness for a particular brand, such as designer labels or department stores. Individuals that are employed as fashion marketing managers usually have job experience and an undergraduate degree in the business industry related subject, such as marketing or fashion merchandising. Professionals who work in fashion marketing and merchandising study fashion trends, help retailers stock fashion lines, coordinate sales, and promote goods. “However, you actually wouldn’t design clothing as marketing and merchandising professional, but you still would be responsible for helping designers by ensuring that their lines will and can sell. Professionals in this field have a wide mix of business skills and textiles knowledge, ability to identify consumer behavior and desires. Therefore, the knowledge of the field of fashion and business are necessary. However, even though Fashion Marketing is one major, it has to aspects that creates it. One is Fashion and the other is Business. This means the study of two different curriculum is a must.” The field of fashion marketing and merchandising covers a wide variety of positions. A fashion buyer, customer service representative, retail store owner, visual merchandiser, retail manager, manufacturer’s representative, operations manager, marketer, advertiser, and more are many options. The expectation that will be performing will differ by job type and title (learn.org par, 3.)

If I told you that Fashion Marketing was my first and last decision on a major I wanted to study, then I’d be lying. As a child growing up, we all had many jobs we admired and wanted to do. But also being a kid, you never settled for one just because there was a big world of endless choices. In my case, the endless world was limited to one field of work and one field one, and that was medical school. Being the oddball out, coming to a doctor wasn’t in my interest but then my family praised them. As I got older and got steps closer towards making a somewhat of a decision on what I found interesting, I felt obligated to go into that field of work. Therefore, I can say I forced and talked myself into it. I hopped through many of the choices in the medical field   in hopes of conniving myself that I’d love doing a certain job, and it’ll be worth it. But, that left me feeling more frustrated and pressured. Closer to the ending years of high school and looking up a little research, I realized that wasn’t for me. One day, hanging out with my older sister and her friend, she asked me what major I wanted to do for college. Thinking that I didn’t have the answer, I gave her the truth and said, “I don’t know.” She asked me “Well, what are things you like to do and then we can find a career like”. I thought for a while and told her fashion and business. She suggested and summer program at The Fashion Institute of Technology. With no hesitation, I went home and absorbed all the information and details about this program and the major. I honestly can say I’m grateful for that day, or I wouldn’t be studying a major I love.

Secondly, the depth background of Fashion Marketing, and the steps and challenges to overcome to be in this major. Fashion is a very fast paced, and exciting business, but it’s also very competitive and stressful. According to agmaglobal.org, a brand is regarded as a name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods or services of one seller or group. To succeed, you’ll have to be both highly skilled and highly talented of some sort. A Two- and four-year degree programs will give valuable training in the technical and creative sides of the wide style industry. Degree programs for fashion design, merchandising and marketing will have many similar educational core requirements, but each one will focus on the skills you’ll need in each particular design fields. Fashion design is a very technical field that suits students who are highly creative and full of new ideas.   Fashion merchandising and fashion marketing focus more on the business side of the fashion industry. Students in fashion merchandising learn the ins and outs of apparel manufacturing, textiles, promotion, buying and selling. Fashion marketing students will learn the best ways to attract and keep customers, evaluate new products and designs, decide on pricing and arrange advertising campaigns. According, to the City Tech catalog   “The Fashion Marketing program at City Tech will help students learn: Theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for career success and professional advancement in fashion marketing. How to meet the professional employment needs and obtain a career in fields such as fashion merchandising, merchandise planning and control, textiles, and fashion buying. Hands-on experience through field trips to fashion markets, showrooms and trade shows that enhance the overall learning experience. How to further your college career by transferring to a senior college to acquire a baccalaureate degree.” “Therefore, City Tech was one best options in a school choice to further my knowledge in Fashion Marketing and furthering my overall skills. With the hands-on skills, I can learn with trial and error as well as learning visually. This will all lead to my advancement in this field.”

Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Managers which is a similar field as Fashion Marketing. Because the work of advertising, promotions, and marketing managers directly affects a firm’s revenue, they typically work closely with top executives. The jobs of advertising, promotions, and marketing managers are usually stressful, particularly near deadlines. They may travel to meet with clients or representatives of communications media. Marketing managers held about 180,500 jobs in 2012. The industries that employed the most marketing managers in 2012. “It may be important to distinguish between a fashion system, fashion, and fashion leadership. Indicated that a fashion system consists of both people and organizations that give symbolic meanings to particular goods. He further notes that fashion could be thought of as A code that helps an individual decipher these meanings” Solomon (2002), According to The Importance of Fashion: The Chinese and U.S. Gen Y Perspective. Agreeing with what was said in the “The Importance of Fashion: The Chinese and U.S. Gen Y Perspective” (Solomon , par, 3.) “Knowing the difference between the fashion as in clothing, the system of fashion such as in depth of the process and production and the knowledge of leadership in the fashion world. “Every career comes with its core, but each career and job has different approaches and solution toward   a specific area or problem. Therefore, it is important to be aware how to distinguish between each factor.”

The lighting is comprehended as the message of a brand, which has an impact on the appearance of architecture and the brand communication. Therefore, the theoretical Background includes marketing with brand identity and two models for brand classification as well as retail lighting design. The first two-dimensional model for brand classification originates from sociology, and the second one derives from marketing with four factors of a   brand. These models are applied to different lighting situations to evaluate the impact on brand perception. The lighting as a cause for brand effects is from both a perception and a technical point of view. To convey a clear brand identity to the consumer, consistent design concepts for retail outlets help a company to form a uniform image. Internship opportunities in the fashion field are typically of three types: 1) store-based; 2) corporate office; and 3) others, such as assistant to a stylist, fashion director, vendor, and so forth (Paulins, 2008). Faculty and/or program administrators decide on acceptable types of internship experiences. In Paulins’ research study, other types of internships were more satisfying to students because there was enough variety of activities when compared to store-based and corporate office internships.” “Therefore, it’s important that not just myself but also anyone interest in the Fashion marketing field look up educational requirement for certain job title. This can help prepare or hinder your chances on landing a job or internship.”

As I already discussed in this essay with the background knowledge, my relation to my interest in this specific major and career, as well as the goals and obstacles on achieving a path in this major. In addition to my previous  knowledge and new knowledge from many helpful and educational resources that I have cited in this essay, I can say that I am now more confident in the major and future career path I have chosen to pursue. With this additional new information and knowledge, I can see myself working toward a major internship with Alexander McQueen. In three years. To add, I can also see myself in the far future having my own business. Using all this new intake of information to help me not just grow has an entrepreneur but grow as an individual.
