“City Techs Road map of Becoming a Radiologist Technician” By Tina Singh

Many tend to claim that the United States is a land of opportunities, freedom, equality and financial stability. However, some of our fellow minorities lacks help medically. There are many people who are in need of medical help between the lower and middle class workers but can rarely afford the expenses without the help of health insurance. Making ends meet and covering the cost of medical bills would be nearly impossible for the poor.

Individuals with disabilities are unfairly stigmatized by our society. Doesn’t matter where or what part of this ecosphere, humans who have developmental difference are less respected and made fun of for their individuality. Not to mention they are negatively label by others. They are also more likely to face unequal treatment, because of this I want to make a change in society. I strongly believe everyone deserves equal medical attention and that’s what I want to provide in the medical care system.

A year ago I enrolled at New York City College of Technology in order to gain a brighter future for me and my family. Radiology is the best career for me because it will allow me to gain knowledge through research to possibly save lives. Radiology gives me a chance to discover new treatments and diagnoses that isn’t present as of now. Doing this will fulfill the purpose of me attending New York City college of technology in order to make my parents and myself proud. Three reasons I choose to pursue a career in the medical field as a Radiology technician is because of three things which is stability for me and my future, to fulfill my passion of helping others, and job opportunities positions wise.

The road map of my future career is to achieve a bachelor’s degree in radiology by attending college for a degree as a radiology technicians attending college for four years. However getting into the radiology technician program you will need one English, two maths, three science, one psychology and philosophy in bio medical ethics. this is about 21 credits to enter the major and 44 credits to graduate with associates. but i’m going for receiving my bachelors which is 120 credits then I will take a certification entrance exam to determine my qualification to enter in the field then attend medical school where I will get additional training that I need. Upon completion of medical school I will pursue working in my career field where I will gain hands on experience.

Radiology is a career where people who help identified and treat illness. They use variety of medical technology of imaging techniques such as x-ray radiography, ultra sounds and nuclear medicine plus many more. They interpret the images and then make a report of their imprint of what they think the diagnosed could be. They work in several areas in the medical field such as hospitals, clinics, imaging centers, and private physicians. However a hospital is the most popular one to work most in the medical field.

Working as a radiology tech you would work about a 40 hour shift a week and that isn’t always the case sometimes it requires an on call night shift and sometimes on weekends. The average annual salary for a radiologist with an associate’s degree is about $55,200 and an hourly rate of $26.88 per hour stated by the U.S. bureau of labor statistics. Your annual salary could increase based on your level of your certification who are knowledgeable of handling equipment’s and machines are paid more.

In my major I will learn how use computers to get and manipulate images and as well how to properly communicate with patients. Being radiology tech I will also learn how to solve problems and work with other healthcare members such as doctors, nurses. Finally I will learn about leadership. The career options I have after graduation in this major I could work as a radiologist technician that work with x-ray machines that takes images internally or with bachelors I can specialize in other areas in radiology such as sonographers and radiation therapist. The primarily reason why I wanted to become a radiologist technician is to provide a financial stability for me, my future and my family and working in my career field I earn a high annual salary between $37,570 and $78,400 annually.

A second reason I decide on this major was because I wanted to help others and provide the right care and medical attention that they need. What inspire me was mainly because of my elder sister Christina and my smallest sibling Andy. My older sister is mentally disable meaning her brain doesn’t function as well as others. She isn’t able to talk or eat by herself or put her own clothes on and aren’t able to take care of herself on her own. My lovely little brother touches my heart every day. He is an artistic child. He cannot talk also but he is able to communicate with us by action and pointing to things he wants like food or to use the bathroom. Children and others like my brother and sister I understand what they go through and the medical attention that they need which inspire me to be someone that change a person life giving them a sense of hope. Lastly because of job opportunities those are available. Radiologist techs are found almost in each state in both urban and rural areas where there is a medical office or hospital. So with my degree I can travel or move and still will be able to find a job in my career any part of the states.

In Conclusion if anyone is seeking to become a radiologist technician my best advice and recommendation is to always remain focus on your work in order to get the highest grade possible. also always seek out advice from someone who is already working on the field or even a consular in that major. This is very important because by speaking to a consular will tell you the right classes you need such as how many credits you will need for your degree and entrance in your major. also i recommend to try to participate with a internship so you can gain experience of a radiology tech and the working environment. Becoming a radiology technician it takes dedication and love for the medical field. if you have the passion go for it.
