“City Techs Road map of Becoming a Radiologist Technician” By Tina Singh

Many tend to claim that the United States is a land of opportunities, freedom, equality and financial stability. However, some of our fellow minorities lacks help medically. There are many people who are in need of medical help between the lower and middle class workers but can rarely afford the expenses without the help of health insurance. Making ends meet and covering the cost of medical bills would be nearly impossible for the poor.

Individuals with disabilities are unfairly stigmatized by our society. Doesn’t matter where or what part of this ecosphere, humans who have developmental difference are less respected and made fun of for their individuality. Not to mention they are negatively label by others. They are also more likely to face unequal treatment, because of this I want to make a change in society. I strongly believe everyone deserves equal medical attention and that’s what I want to provide in the medical care system.

A year ago I enrolled at New York City College of Technology in order to gain a brighter future for me and my family. Radiology is the best career for me because it will allow me to gain knowledge through research to possibly save lives. Radiology gives me a chance to discover new treatments and diagnoses that isn’t present as of now. Doing this will fulfill the purpose of me attending New York City college of technology in order to make my parents and myself proud. Three reasons I choose to pursue a career in the medical field as a Radiology technician is because of three things which is stability for me and my future, to fulfill my passion of helping others, and job opportunities positions wise.

The road map of my future career is to achieve a bachelor’s degree in radiology by attending college for a degree as a radiology technicians attending college for four years. However getting into the radiology technician program you will need one English, two maths, three science, one psychology and philosophy in bio medical ethics. this is about 21 credits to enter the major and 44 credits to graduate with associates. but i’m going for receiving my bachelors which is 120 credits then I will take a certification entrance exam to determine my qualification to enter in the field then attend medical school where I will get additional training that I need. Upon completion of medical school I will pursue working in my career field where I will gain hands on experience.

Radiology is a career where people who help identified and treat illness. They use variety of medical technology of imaging techniques such as x-ray radiography, ultra sounds and nuclear medicine plus many more. They interpret the images and then make a report of their imprint of what they think the diagnosed could be. They work in several areas in the medical field such as hospitals, clinics, imaging centers, and private physicians. However a hospital is the most popular one to work most in the medical field.

Working as a radiology tech you would work about a 40 hour shift a week and that isn’t always the case sometimes it requires an on call night shift and sometimes on weekends. The average annual salary for a radiologist with an associate’s degree is about $55,200 and an hourly rate of $26.88 per hour stated by the U.S. bureau of labor statistics. Your annual salary could increase based on your level of your certification who are knowledgeable of handling equipment’s and machines are paid more.

In my major I will learn how use computers to get and manipulate images and as well how to properly communicate with patients. Being radiology tech I will also learn how to solve problems and work with other healthcare members such as doctors, nurses. Finally I will learn about leadership. The career options I have after graduation in this major I could work as a radiologist technician that work with x-ray machines that takes images internally or with bachelors I can specialize in other areas in radiology such as sonographers and radiation therapist. The primarily reason why I wanted to become a radiologist technician is to provide a financial stability for me, my future and my family and working in my career field I earn a high annual salary between $37,570 and $78,400 annually.

A second reason I decide on this major was because I wanted to help others and provide the right care and medical attention that they need. What inspire me was mainly because of my elder sister Christina and my smallest sibling Andy. My older sister is mentally disable meaning her brain doesn’t function as well as others. She isn’t able to talk or eat by herself or put her own clothes on and aren’t able to take care of herself on her own. My lovely little brother touches my heart every day. He is an artistic child. He cannot talk also but he is able to communicate with us by action and pointing to things he wants like food or to use the bathroom. Children and others like my brother and sister I understand what they go through and the medical attention that they need which inspire me to be someone that change a person life giving them a sense of hope. Lastly because of job opportunities those are available. Radiologist techs are found almost in each state in both urban and rural areas where there is a medical office or hospital. So with my degree I can travel or move and still will be able to find a job in my career any part of the states.

In Conclusion if anyone is seeking to become a radiologist technician my best advice and recommendation is to always remain focus on your work in order to get the highest grade possible. also always seek out advice from someone who is already working on the field or even a consular in that major. This is very important because by speaking to a consular will tell you the right classes you need such as how many credits you will need for your degree and entrance in your major. also i recommend to try to participate with a internship so you can gain experience of a radiology tech and the working environment. Becoming a radiology technician it takes dedication and love for the medical field. if you have the passion go for it.

Kevin Franco Exploration

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, Medina speaks about the untainted mind of a newly-born child. He speaks of the natural feeling we get to want to explore something. As a baby, we love to touch everything and taste anything, this is because we have an instinct to explore. Even while we grow up we still like to explore new things which is why when we get hurt by something we learn to avoid that which hurt us. This explains the natural instinct to always try something new, because you want to experience it for yourself.

Kevin Franco Gender

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, Medina  speaks about the differences between male and female. For example, the differences in sicknesses and disease we develop. Males are more prone to doing drugs, while females have a higher chance of developing depression. Males also use the right side of their brain, which lets them just get the feeling of what is done, while females tend to look into detail whatever it is they experience or do. This explains a lot about gender and the different mentalities that males and females have.

Kevin Franco Short-Term Memory

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, Medina speaks about how we forget everything very quickly. He speaks of the 4 stages of processing memories, they are: encoding, storing, retrieving, and forgetting. He mentions how the brain has a better chance of remembering something that you constantly repeat to yourself. When you try to remember something, the memories you have that were split into fragments, try to re-connect to make that memory again. I believe this is why retracing your steps works to remember something you forgot.

Kevin Franco Attention

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, he speaks about attention. The thing he said that caught my attention the most was that in a lecture after 10 minutes of listening, the average student will get bored and just think about something else. In my experience, this is extremely true. I lost interest in several classes where teachers just keep talking without interacting with the students. Attention is a thing that one can lose easily, for example a writer knows that he has to grab the readers attention from the start, this will lead to the purchase of the writers book. Attention plays a big part in everyday lives.

Kevin Franco Wiring

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, John Medina speaks about the wiring of the brain. He speaks about how everyone’s brain is different. We all think differently, because of the way our brains are wired. For example, when you read a poem, we almost all interpret it differently. This is a good example of how our mind is different. Through our lives, we encounter different situations and experience feelings in reaction to these situations differently. This shapes are brain which is why everyone’s brain is different.

Kevin Franco Vision

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, Medina speaks about Vision. Vision is a very important sense in life, there are some that do not have vision but rely on other senses. All throughout my life, i have had 20/20 in eye vision. Vision contributes to the way you understand things. When you are being taught something, it is proven that you will understand things better if you use your vision rather then hear it. Although, in the chapter it speaks about how our vision has damaged our other senses, due to the fact that our perception changes when we see something.

Kevin Franco Sensory Integration

In this chapter of, The Brain Rules, Medina speaks about sensory integration. Sensory integration is pretty much when you use your senses, to understand something. Such as when you see a dog, all your senses come together and draw you a picture so that you can understand it. Sensory integration happens in everyone’s everyday life. I am always listening to music when I do almost anything, especially when i play basketball. I do it so often that whenever i hear a song thats on my playlist i think about basketball. Sensory integration happens to everyone self-conciously.

Kevin Franco Stress

In this chapter of John Medina’s book, The Brain Rules, Medina speaks about Stress, a natural occurrence in everyone’s lives. Stress prevents you from doing many things, stress affects your ability to make decisions and your cognitive skills, such as memory. I can relate to this chapter as I am always stressed, if it’s not school it’s problems at home or lack of sleep. Stress really hurts the brain in ways that will most likely effect your learning capability as well, as your ability to do simple daily functions. When I am stressed my mood is low, I tend to get confused. Stress can affect you massively and cause you to be unable to do simple tasks, it also effects your heart rate and that can lead to serious health problems.

Kevin Franco Sleep

In this chapter of The Brain Rules, Medina explains how sleep is a huge part of your day. Loss of sleep has major impacts on your ability to do simple actions. Sleep helps you pretty much get through your day, simple tasks such as walking, attention, and even remembering things are affected by sleep. Without sleep, your brain is not working hard, in fact you are most likely making more mistakes throughout the days, whereas someone who gets sleep can apply their mind to whatever comes their way, since it is able to perform tasks relatively easy. I personally lack sleep some days, I tend to fall asleep everywhere, my attention is elsewhere, and my reactions are slow. With this chapter the importance of sleep is now to me pretty significant. I plan to try and get some more sleep, so that i could function better during the day.
