  1. In college writing it is important to use textual evidence to better support your ideas or argument. When the reader reads your writing they get more of an idea of what you are trying to say. It is important to cite where you got the information so that the original writer can get credit for it. ICE ( introduce, cite and explain) , is also important in college writing. Introducing a quote is important so that the reader knows that you are about to use someone else’s writing as an example. Citing where the quote came from is important because the reader should know where it came from and it also gives the original writer credit. Explaining your quote is also important, so that the reader can understand what you are trying to prove with the quote. Signal phrases also is like introducing a quote. You signal that you are about to use someones example like saying “according to.” . This is all important in college writing so that a professor or student could easily read your paper without feeling any confusion and they can understand where you are getting you’re evidence from.

Textual evidence is when you have evidence from a text that you are able to use to help support your claims, your ideas and arguments you may have. When you want to use someone’s else words or saying, you usually quote their text so that you know you aren’t the one who came up with that saying, but the author/original speaker had said that. You can then explain on that quote to help you support your claims, ideas, and arguments. You can also just paraphrase what the author said and put it into your own words so you aren’t plagiarizing. This is how textual evidence is useful in college writing.

It’s definitely the case that we, college students, lack expertise in many of the subjects we are tasked with writing about. Due to this lack of knowledge, we cannot expect our personal experiences to be enough, by themselves, to sufficiently support any of the claims we make in our writing. However, we can overcome this issue by relying on textual evidence to support our claims. There are three ways we can use textual evidence. We can summarize, paraphrase, or quote the text. While using textual evidence it is important to remember the ICE guideline of introduce, cite, and explain. By introducing a quote, the reader will know what he or she is reading. By citing a quote, the reader will know where exactly we pulled that excerpt from. And by explaining a quote, the reader will be able to understand how the quote relates to our claims.

I Think it is very Important to use textual evidence in college writing or any type of writing because you can’t just win an argument alone without anyone backing up your claim and your side of the story, and that’s what textual evidence is for it is for backing up your reasoning and giving it more legs to stand on so it can be stronger and harder to take down. I also think it even more important to follow the MLA or any guidelines to being with because that is telling you what to do and if you don’t follow those guidelines carefully you can go from a 80 essay without our taking the guidelines in affect to a 60 essay by just one of the guidelines that you didn’t take in account. Which is kinda crazy to think about in my opinion
