  1. One question I have about the college research process is if we have to use all three sources a book, web and articles ?

    My develop research question is
Is technology affecting kids in reading and writing practices ?

  2. One question I have about the college research process is if we have to use all three sources a book, web and articles ?

    My develop research question is
Is technology affecting kids in reading and writing practices ?

  3. My research question is
Does technologies effect us or we decide to get effected by it?
One question regarding the college research process is, does it really need all the three sources (books, web, and articles)?

    • Emran,

This is a fascinating question. It is also a very complex one since issues related to economics, psychology, and sociology are involved in formulating an answer to it. Were you able to find sources related to this question? If not, let me know. Regarding the three sources, for this assignment, we will be using all three.

  4. Anika says:

A question I have about the College research process is even though we only have to find one for each of the three different sources, should we continue to look for others?
My developing research question is how has technology impacted the reading and writing practices of students?

    • Anika,

Please feel free to keep looking for better sources. However, for this assignment, please limit yourself to five sources. I don’t want you to be overwhelmed. Your question sounds good. The more specific you can be regarding the question, the better. For instance, are you specifically interested in student concentration as they read and write?

  5. T. Mohamed says:

My College Research Process question is can I use more than article of a certain category? (more than one internet source, book, or article)
My Developing Research Question is, should technology and literacy be more involved with each other?

    • Mohamed,

For a research project in any other course, you could certainly use multiple sources from one category. However, for this specific research project, we are trying to limit the number of sources we are using to no more than five. If you feel that you would like to keep looking for better sources, feel free to do that. But, as I mentioned to Anika (above), at some point, you have to decide to work with the sources that you have collected.

Your draft research question is intriguing and very broad. Could you write a bit more about what questions you hope to address? With a question like the one you’ve selected to start with, it is often necessary to work with the sources you have collected. What do they have to say about technologies and literacy? Is there a research question in any one of them that you could work with?

  6. Chadel says:

My College Research Process Question is:
How does a Research paper differ from an argumentive essay?

My Developing Research Question is: Is Technology a Good or Bad influence for Public Schoolers?

    • Chadel,

Your question is a very interesting one since many argumentative essays involve research. I’d say that the primary difference between the two essay genres is the scope and purpose of each. In a research paper, you are addressing a research question. In an argumentative essay, you are arguing for or against a specific position.

Regarding your draft research question, it is too broad. By focusing on how the digital divide is a factor in the successful use of technologies in public schools, you will narrow the question. Of course, even that question could be narrowed. For instance, you might focus on the use of technologies in teaching a specific subject in public schools. Here is one research source that you may find helpful: https://psmag.com/education/digital-divide-in-public-schools-is-an-access-issue

  7. Kyle Brunson says:

My Developing Research Question is :
    Should eBooks replace printed books?

For the College Research Process, I was wondering if this research process changes significantly, if at all, depending on what field you work in?

    • Kyle,

The specifics of the research process definitely change depending on the field you are working in. However, there are similarities in the general approach to research across fields.

For your draft research question, I’d suggest looking through the research sources that you’ve collected and making your question a bit more specific. For instance, what are the advantages and disadvantages of ebooks versus print books in terms of usability, environmental impact, and/or piracy?

  8. My Developing Research Question is:
Technology accelerates the process of learning to read in children?
with respect to College Research Project. What is the main difference between the Primary Reseach and Secondary Research? In both examples the word “experiment” is mentioned and that confuses me, since I had thought that the secondary search was the most specific and the primary in just general terms.

    • Jazmin,

I’d suggest re-wording your draft research question as: “Does technology accelerate children’s reading abilities? Why or why not?” I’d also suggest focusing on a specific technology, i.e., ebooks, tablet computers, video games, etc.

  9. My College research Process Questions: I’m using three sources for research paper, which include an internet source related to topic, a multimedia source from Vanderbilt University video lecture “Science and Technology,” but for the Article from a scholarly journal, magazine do I have to pay for access to academic search complete or LexisNexis?
My Developing Research Question is Technology has affected society attention to focus on full concentration.

    • Collin,

Regarding paying for scholarly articles, the answer is: ABSOLUTELY NO! You have access to all of these articles for free via the City Tech Library and the databases it subscribes to. If you have any questions about this, please contact Nora Alameida, the librarian working with our class this semester or talk to me on Wednesday. You can e-mail Professor Alameida at: nalameida@citytech.cuny.edu or stop by the library and talk to her or any reference librarian.

  10. Demba Diop says:

    my developing research question is:
how many step we have to follow to make a college research?

    My college research question is
Is E-book a way to keep a book eternally?

    • Demba,

The broad topic of ebooks and the preservation of information is a fascinating one. For your draft research question, I’d suggest looking through the research sources that you’ve collected and making your question a bit more specific.

  11. Account Deleted says:

My develop research question : How does the internet positively impact users?

A question regarding the college research : If one source ( book, article, web, etc) is better than the other or gives more details, can we use that one source more often than the others?

    • Sheldon,

Your draft research question looks very good. Regarding your question about using some sources more than others, the simple answer is “yes.” However, in practice, the answer is a bit more complicated. We all tend to rely on some sources more than others. However, we also have to, at the same time, make sure not to rely too heavily on one particular source. We will talk more about this question in class. It is a very good one!

  12. Samuel Lau says:

College Research Process Question: Does it matter what kind of internet source, book, or article I get it from as long as it is relevant to my topic?

Developing Research Question: Can technology replace books altogether?

    • Sam,

Regarding your first question, the answer is a RESOUNDING “YES!!!!!!!!!” If that is not clear to you, please review the materials on “finding reliable sources” that are part of RWA10. Regarding your draft research question, I have a question for you: what do you mean by technology? Please specify the type of technology you are interested in studying in relation to print books.

  13. Alex says:

my question is : do we have to use a three source of material on the research paper?

develop research question : how does technology change the mind of new born child as they growth different than the past?

    • Alex,

For this research assignment, you must use three sources. For most research projects, you will use anywhere from five to twenty sources. For a very large research project, such as a dissertation, you will use hundreds of sources.

Regarding your draft research question, could you explain a bit more about what exactly you are hoping to research? Are you in interested in how the use of some specific technology by pregnant women may influence the development of an unborn child? Please let me know the answer to this question by writing more about what questions you hope to investigate.

  14. Huilinmei says:

My college research process question is do we have any step to follow for our research paper?
My develop research question is what are the long term effects of living in a technological world? Are these mostly negative or positive ?

    • Hui Lin,

I’m not understanding your first question. Could you please re-write it to clarify what it is you are asking?

Regarding your research question, you need to narrow and focus the question. What particular “effects” are you interested in? Environmental? Social? Psychological? What do you mean by a “technological world”? As I recommended to just about everyone in the class, focusing on a specific issue an a specific technology will mean that you have a much better research question.

  15. chemar prussia says:

My question: What the differences between college research and other research?

Develop research question: Is technology changing how students learn ?

    • Anonymous says:

      Chemar,

Before I respond to your first question, you need to revise it.

Regarding your research question, please see my comments above re: narrowing research questions. Based on my comments and suggestions above, how can you make yours more focused? Please let me know!

  16. Ojanny says:

Question. Out of the three sources we have to use for our research paper, how many must be books ?

Develop Research Question: What are the side effects of solely relying on technology to learn ?

    • Anonymous says:

      Ojanny,

You only need to locate one book for our research assignment. Regarding your research question, please see my comments above re: narrowing research questions. Based on my comments and suggestions above, how can you make yours more focused? Please let me know!

  17. omayra garcia says:

My Question: Can we use both Primary and Secondary resources?
Develop Research Question: How can technology affect the life of a college student?

    • Omayra,

For this project, we will only be using secondary research sources. However, considering your research question, I certainly understand why you are asking about primary sources! Thanks for bringing this up. We will discuss the differences between the two in our class today. Regarding your draft research question, I would recommend focusing on a specific technology. You have chosen a very interesting topic!
