Wall Assemblies and Vapor Barriers

General strategies:

• keep water out
• let water out if it gets in

Strategies:

  • always place the moisture retarder close to the warm side of the your wall assembly
  • these thermal insulation, multiple glazing and thermal breaks to keep interior surfaces at temperatures above the air dew point
  • use warm side vapor retarder to keep air from which surfaces and spaces that are cold enough to cause condensation
  • always ventilate part of the wall assembly that lies on the cold side of the vapor barrier
  • where condensation is likely to occur provide gravity driven systems to catch and remove water
