William Wegman Sperone Westwater Gallery Review

Located on 257 Bowery, the Sperone Westwater has many wonderful art pieces up on display, showing off what many artists/photographers have to offer. Inside, there’s an exhibit called “William Wegman’s Dressed and Undressed”. Throughout the entire exhibit, there’s over 30 years of 20×24 polaroids Wegman has taken himself. The picture I selected to write about is this one photo called “Bus Stop” I don’t know what’s with Wegman and his thing with dogs combined with a variety of things but everyone else seems to like it. The subject of the picture is a dog wearing some sort of trench coat along with a suitcase. This, in a way, gives off a stylish look to the dogs he uses in each one of his photos, anthropomorphising them giving us the viewers something compelling in front of our eyes, making them interesting and captivating.

LL: Painting w/ Light

Out of all the pictures we’ve taken, this one was my favorite. As you see here, Jovany is sitting criss cross applesauce while the light that was drawn out with one of our phones flashlight, giving a spiral spring look surrounding him. If you think about it, it’s like as if he’s meditating and you would see how his aura or energy would look. From the look he’s giving, his facial expression shows relaxation, blocking out everything around him.

Homework 1: Photo Description

http://www.michaelkenna.net/gallery.php?id=14

The picture I chose was from Michael Kenna’s New York photo collection. This image I selected shows the Empire State Building as the main subject. The thing about this image however is that there’s a reflection of the Empire State Building giving off a use of symmetry. Same can be said for leading lines and repetition as well.

Painting with Light

When me and my group were painting with light I took a really good photo of Nipah. And I have to say so far this one is my favorite photo because there are a lot fade and light shown in the photo. Nipah swing two different colored lights were mesmerizing and the lights were both moving in a rhythm together and they are both connecting in this unique photo

Modernism in the Ganges Reflection

*We weren’t allowed to take photos at the exhibit*

I went to visit the Modernism on the Ganges exhibit at the Met Breuer. In order to reach the exhibit, you need to enter the elevators to the right of the entrance. Take the elevator to the second floor, and the exhibit takes up the entire floor. The room is split into multiple sections, with a  collection of his photographs as well as others strewn about the exhibition. In the exhibitions, two of his photos caught my interest because of their subject matter as well as the compositional elements.

The first photo was the Sunhas Chandra Bose Statue, which was taken in 1971. The photo shows two gentlemen holding a green door that has a hole for a window, but the window was removed. In the window frame was a statue, creating a frame within a frame composition. This drew my attention to the statue first before viewing the rest of the photograph because it was framed by the window frame, which took up most of the photo.

The other photo that caught my attention was Goa, which was taken in 1996. The photo shows the inside of a car looking over a wall at a large white building. While this photo also has a frame within a frame because we are seeing the image through a car windshield, the main focus is the patterning on the wall and the reflection of another car in the rear-view mirror. The bricks that make up the wall in front of the building creates a pattern. The photo also has a reflection in the rear-view mirror of a car, making this photo have many elements.

Best portrait

I like this photo because of one side is dark and the other side other face is light up. Soft light is shown in this photograph.

Best Portrait LL5

I picked this photo as one of our groups best ones because of the placement of the subject in the composition and because of  the execution the broad lighting used. The illuminated backdrop frames the subject in a way that highlights the mood of the piece.

Lightshow

For this picture, our group decided to use the flashlight as well as our phone lights to create shapes simultaneously. We chose to do a triangle, a heart, a circle, and a square but we found it difficult to  fit everyone into frame, so the square was drawn above the circle. However, it was very fun to  fit it all together and have all these shapes in one shot.

Best picture: Painting with Light

In this shot, my classmate, Ivan’s facial expression and his composure worked together with the mood of the photo, powerful and strong. We manipulated a strong rod of light with a phone’s flashlight to make it as though he’s holding it. And the red contrasting with the black background worked well, as it looked as though he was creeping from the dark.
