Service Learning Project

In March 2020, I went to a preschool called “Joy Learning Garden” with four of my classmates to promote oral health.

The average age of the children there was three-years-old, so this was a new experience. We formulated activities, demonstrations, and explanations that were compatible and fun for this age group. Our presentation consisted of what to expect at the first dental visit, demonstrated brushing techniques, and played an activity to allow the toddlers to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods. This activity allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and coordinate activity. This event will definitely stay with me and will be one of the events that I remember when looking back to dental hygiene school.

Posters used during the presentation.

The first thing we did when we started our presentation was asking the students if they brushed their teeth that morning. We were interactive with the students and gave them many compliments.

One interaction we had with the students there was “tell, show, do.” After demonstrating how to brush on the typodont we gave the students an opportunity to show us the circular brushing technique.
