Secondary Data Summary

What we learn from doing the interview with Amazon and Target. We spoke to Jorge Lizano who works for Amazon and to the person who we spoke from Target is Andy Penn. We found how both of the interviewees worked in the company for about a couple of years so they have experience with the marketing in the sales department. For Amazon customers, the range of purchasing things is while and every customer buys what they need for the Target. The interviewee had it depends on the customer, the season, and what comes out during this time the new Xbox and PlayStation Five that coming out people are purchasing more electronics at this time for Target. Everyone shops at Amazon and Target so as the interviewees they say they get a discount when they purchase a thing which is nice. When speaking to Amazon interviewee about what Amazon represents in the past and what it represents now. What he said was “The company makes things easy for many people in terms of things you want you can buy,” I think what he meant is that the company will always keep changing to make it easy for people to keep coming back to Amazon. Amazon tries to keep it easy and simple for people to use amazon and helps it, customers out in every way possible which I agree with my own experience while dealing with amazon for help. From Target what represents in the past and what does it represents now he said that “This brand will always be here to help we will always provide more product for the people and it still has” Target and Amazon have the same as too what they represent now and the past there always here to help the customer and always making and also going beyond to help people with their shopping experience. When asking who were the biggest competitors Amazon had said “We have a range of competitors but it’s hard to say who is our biggest one”. When I asked Target the same question they said “Too many competitors’ ‘ That true there are too many online competitors like Walmart, Kmart, and Costco. The third to last question to Amazon was that What makes target or Walmart better than amazon which they said back was “We make thing easy for the customer and we sell many things” What Target said about the same question was “We have a dog as a mascot who doesn’t love dogs. Every target has a dog in the store and many people take a picture with it.” which was an interesting answer. The next question I asked was how do you stay competitors in the industry which Amazon said “Try to improve and make products better and simple for people” and Target replied back to the question “We try our best to keep up in demand with the customers.” The last question I asked was What are your sales tactics? Amazon said “We always make more products for people and improve our services “ and Target said “We try to have exclusive brand deals with other companies and holidays sales. Also our slogans are “expect more and pay less”.  From what I learn from the interview both companies have different ways of getting customers and staying on top of the game. Amazon tries to make new products and improve customer care. While Target always makes sure there are the latest products and there always products for customers to buy from.

Observation and Problem Definition: Jump-Starting the Research Proposal

1. Problem Statement:

Amazon is taking over many industries with its online dominance.

Amazon being one of the worlds largest companies with a market value of $1.14 trillion, surpassing many other well known companies. Amazon is taking over many industries with its ability to use the internet and technology to help consumers find and buy anything imaginable. With our research we want to find out the demographics that make the most impact on Amazon’s growth. As well as the amount of people that would prefer Amazon over other online/in store companies.

Amazon obtains physical retail stores, subscription services, and web services.Amazon’s retail store rivals include Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Costco.Amazon in subscription services, Amazon competes with Netflix, Apple, and Google. The retail sales E Commerce Competitors For Amazon the following which is  Walmart is department store generates $514.41 billion in net sales per year. “Aliexpress has 755 million users worldwide. 2. Research Objectives:

To find out if the majority of people prefer using Amazon as their shopping epicenter

Since nearly two-thirds of Americans now say they’ve bought something on Amazon, according to a new NPR/Marist poll. That is 92 percent of America’s online shoppers which is to say, almost all of them. More than 40 percent say they buy something on Amazon once a month or more often. We wanted to find out if the majority of people prefer using amazon as their epicenter since plenty of americans can say they’ve bought at least once on Amazon. People are primarily motivated to shop on Amazon by low prices, free shipping, and convenience, finds a new report from Epsilon. And yet these same factors particularly prices and free shipping would also help shoppers purchase from another retailer, according to the study. That’s another reason why we wanted to find out if they prefer Amazon as their epicenter reason being that people are drawn to it.

3. Research Questions:

1. Has Amazon played a role in bringing consumerism online?

2. Do big box chain stores have a fighting chance against Amazon?

3. What was amazon known for in its beginnings ?

4. Can Amazon be stopped?

5. Is Jeff Bezos human?

6. Will Amazon ever expand and create a shopping center ?

4. Hypothesis:

The consumer Market has been changing over the years and many online retailers have been competing with each other but one online retail has been standing on top.Amazon has been beating other consumers. From first selling  a Kindle book all the way to selling every consumer item that is possible. With more research we hope to find reasons why Amazon’s been beating numerous online consumers.Find the secret to Amazon success.

Our group has come up with many surveys and questions to find why people like to shop at Amazon and how Amazon gets its consumers. We would rank what is the highest question that everyone has answered to find why people shop at Amazon than other online consumers .I thank everyone who’s taken the survey and helped us with our research to why Amazon is the number one consumer.

Selection of Sample Design

When conducting research, there are eight ways of sampling one can choose from

  1. Simple Random Samples
  2. Systematic Samples
  3. Stratified Samples
  4. Convenience Sampling
  5. Cluster Sampling
  6. Judgement Samples
  7. Quota Samples
  8. Snowball Samples

My team and I chose Simple Random Samples to get the answers for the experience survey. A simple random sample is a subset of a statistical population in which each member of the subset has an equal probability of being chosen. A simple random sample is meant to be an unbiased representation of a group. We decided to talk to random employees one from Amazon and another from Target but for the Questionnaire we decided to use social media due to the circumstances that we are facing currently. Our target population consists of people who constantly shop at Amazon because we want to find out why people are drawn to it. This means that our target are people between the ages 20 to 29 because they have the highest proportion of Amazon Prime membership holders, with 82% claiming that they do.

Ways and Methods for Pretesting A Questionnaire

Just like the main research itself, the researcher may also be required to follow a step by step procedure for pretesting of the questionnaire. Pretesting is however carried out on a smaller scale while choosing representatives that represent the larger/target survey group. These representatives are then approached by the researcher for answering the question. The researcher may or may not declare to the respondents that it is a pretest.

As we previously have written before we have decided to give out the questionnaire to five people in the target population. While conducting the survey. We have noticed that our focusing was mainly on target and Amazon. There was another brand that was mentioned like Walmart,Costco, and Sam’s Clubs, there were more names mentioned but those brands were mentioned the most. We found that the questionnaire was not organized to the point where it was out of place. For example, there is a question which is asked currently to reside where it should be placed around six questions that should be asked. The five people who took felt that the question wasn’t personal enough where it could relate it back to them. Other errors were the Questionnaires were a bit wordy and lengthy. Which the five people felt during the time doing the questions were a bit time consuming.

We took all their feedback into consideration, to make our questionnaire. To fix these errors we started by expanding more than just Nike and Amazon. We include other brands that the five people have mentioned so we add more those brands into the questionnaire. Another thing we have done is trying to organize the question so it would be in order.

Planning the Research Design

Methodology

Research design is a bunch of various strategies or potential techniques that are utilized in gathering just as dissecting proportions of the factors in the difficult examination. The system is a particular kind of method and methodology that is utilized to distinguish, select just as a cycle, and dissect data about a particular theme.

A survey is a sort of examination technique that is explicitly utilized for gathering information from various gatherings of respondents to pick up data on different subjects of interest. It can have an assortment of purposes just as done in various manners relying upon the Methodology that is picked.

We picked the Survey method technique since studies can help with understanding a person’s perspective just as their experience. Reviews can furnish us with enough data so we can gather information and think about just as we settle on our ultimate conclusions. Studies give individuals’ feelings, practices that we can use to settle on significant and ultimate choices.

 Surveys

Used to conduct and obtain information from a sample of individuals through the response to the question. This allows for the variety methods of data collection with the insight of various topics. This involves asking people for information through a questionnaire, which can be taken in person, through the phone, online and on paper.  Our group decided to use both an experience survey as well as a questionnaire, an experience survey is a questionnaire designed to help a business capture customers’ thoughts and feelings about their brand, product and/or services. For example our group surveyed Jorge Lizano, a current Amazon employee that has been involved with the company for over 3 years. Jorge was able to briefly summarize what customers purchase at amazon, who are the company’s competitors and what are his tacticals. Mr. Lizano was able to communicate to our group members that amazon runs on making the shopping experience as easy as possible for their customers, while always improving their system and service. With the information given between both experienced survey volunteers we were able to retrieve more insight within the company, causing our research to run smoother.

Pre-Test

Before giving out the questionnaire for the people in our target marketing. We all decided to give out the questionnaire to five people first. That is called a pre-test. You may ask what a Pre-test is where a questionnaire is tested on few people to respond to your target market. This is done before giving out the full version of the questionnaire. The reason for the pretest is so the researchers and the analysts can identify any problems or errors that may occur. Questionnaire pretesting is to determine or judge the effectiveness of a survey questionnaire. The pretesting process and tests help the researcher know the weakness and strengths of the questionnaire, in areas including order, wording formatting, and others. Pretesting can be of two types participating and undeclared.

In the case of participating pretests, the researcher declares to the respondents that the questionnaire is a kind of practice run. The participants are asked questions related to the order, wording, or form of the questionnaire. A participating pretest helps the researcher know whether the questionnaire is understandable or not.

In an undeclared pretest, the researcher does not declare to the respondents that a trial run or pretest is being carried out. Therefore, the respondents often presume that the interview is being conducted for real. The method helps to know more about the analysis options available to the refresher and may also help towards the standardization of survey.

Ways and Methods for Pretesting A Questionnaire

Just like the main research itself, the researcher may also be required to follow a step-by-step procedure for pretesting of the questionnaire. Pretesting is however carried out on a smaller scale while choosing representatives that represent the larger/target survey group. These representatives are then approached by the researcher for answering the question. The researcher may or may not declare to the respondents that it is a pretest. The five people who took felt that the question was not personal enough where it could relate it back to them.

Also, we have gotten feedback from the professor on how the question should be phased. So, we rewrote them so the question would give a yes or no answer. Moving some questions around so they would be places where would be needed. Some of the chart questions in the questionnaire needed to be rewritten so it would give a better result into how they feel about the question. We also forgot to give the introduction its own page. We have made that change and fixed it.

Overall, the feedback from our pre-test participants was helpful and help from the professor was another bonus help to making our questionnaires better for our main test. We thank our participants for helping us with our questionnaires and giving us a better opportunity to help us make our main test better for our participants and we will not make the same mistake. This way, the respondents will understand how much they are appreciated and how much of their time was valued. We can’t thank enough for our participation in helping us out on our research project.

Main Study

Using prior research of Amazon and Target data suggest that Amazon within over the year would surpass Target and become successful in their business plan that would lead Amazon more value than Target. Amazon has been dominating the e-commerce space for a while with its two-day shipping according to business inside. Amazon has taken over mostly e-commerce. When it comes to shopping for example kitchen appliance’s Amazon takes the win for it. Businesses inside find that Amazon gives a better price which commerce like  on average, items at Target were 1.16% more expensive than those at Amazon. Which tells that commerce chooses to buy things from Amazon more than Target. Another shopping section is miscellaneous. From inside the business they found Targets were selling products at a higher cost than Amazon which makes commerce more likely to pick Amazon to do their online shopping.

Using the data from our survey we found there is a large amount of loyal customers for Amazon. Question 23 was asked about how loyal you are to Amazon. We got about 58% from our participation saying they were loyal to only shopping at Amazon. Which it shows to tell you amazing work on making sure their customer comes back to them and shop. The most surprising fact is that when looking at question 24 was Would you switch from Amazon to another online retailer? result 45% choose Probably note which shows again that Amazon is a focus not to be messed with.

Overall the participation of the main test leads more on the Amazon side when choosing a go to online retailer which shows how Amazon is dominating the online retail game. Amazon finds new ways to get customers to come back and shop. Amazon always comes out with many new features or new products or deals to get back at customers, making them feel welcome. Also Amazon has expanded to streaming music and videos trying to compete with others. Unlike Target they have not started to branch out to streaming music or videos. Another interesting thing Amazon does is get influencers to help them by being in the Amazon echo being their voices. At the end Amazon takes a win.

Data Analysis

Editing

Data editing is defined as the process involving the review and adjustment of collected survey data. The purpose is to control the quality of the collected data. Data editing can be performed manually, with the assistance of a computer or a combination of both. We made sure the questionnaire was clear to understand. The importance of data editing lies in the fact that it helps to maximize the usefulness of data, making it imperative to ensure that the data used is free of the errors arising during their collection or entry, and is coherent and consistent, since such characteristics have a favourable impact on the quality of the output of such data, which in turn reflects positively on the quality of the decisions based on the data in question. Overall, there were thirty-one questions in the entire questionnaire. Finally, we took the essential measures to ensure that the questionnaire was carefully answered. Also, Conducted a manual data review.

Coding

In market research, coding involves collating the various responses gained during the fieldwork process into a set of several key ‘issues’ – each issue is then given a code. Coding is most often performed on open ended questions so that responses can be quantified. Coding in market research is a valuable process and necessary for reporting. It allows respondents to express their thoughts and opinions through their own words. In addition to the rich and insightful open-ended responses, coding allows you to quantify the feedback into charts and graphs for your report. As mentioned before, we have used many open-ended questions regarding our questionnaire. Using open-ended questions allowed us to find out why people love amazon so much and it allowed us to dig deeper and identify why people are drawn to it.

Planning The Research Design

The particular procedure or set of procedures used in a study of activity is our bread and butter, our  Methodology. For research with the intention of finding valuable information during marketing ploys, there is a process that we as individuals and or companies use to collect data and gain knowledge to formulate the most accurate and worth it business decisions. A majority of the methods used in this specific methodology contain but are not limited to, questionnaires, group interviews, blind data research, focus groups,  surveys, and case studies. During this research we conducted a questionnaire to find the best and most accurate data.

We have found that surveys are the most well receptive tool when conducting marketing research. There are various ways to survey individuals to find out key data and information that can be useful for a company or for personal needs that can be conducted. An experienced survey is an interview with an expert in the field of the market search. Mimi, one of our prized individuals conducted a survey with employees of amazon and other retailers to find data from the source, more importantly, the demographic were trying to assess. Mimi asked an employee of Amazon named Kirby who had been working there for almost 3 years, Kirby gave Mimi a brief summary of what his duties and responsibilities were as an employee at Amazon’s warehouse.  She also asked a handful of other questions about his work experience before and his current opinion and attitude towards Amazon as a whole,  questions that came to be very useful for our research. The information Kirby provided us with gave us an insight about the company and how they maneuvered as a whole. The questionnaire/survey helped us get to the bottom of our research objective and answer our hypothesis. Furthermore, our interviewees were assessed over our 31 question questionnaire that consisted of 28 questions in which were statistical and demographic questions. Among these questions were valuable answer choices that fulfilled our research and rounded us towards a final answer to our hypothesis. When the respondents were done with the questionnaire, we gathered the responses and analyzed the data we received thus bringing us to our final steps in this research study!

In Conclusion creating sample design, data collection ,research design and recommendations is an important part of the group project. In the group project we learned to work together and take turns taking responsibility for the project. Consumers are more important to the market and keep business at the best .

Recommendation that’s been considered for Amazon to pay a small percentage for endorsement from international instagrammers and very popular individuals with large following. Those individuals will be able to make Amazon known to people who don’t know about Amazon.
