National Guard reservist Ed Drew has revived the tintype to document modern warfare. In his pictures the soldiers are wearing their army attire. Some of the soldiers pictured look serious while others are smiling. I think the revival of this old process is “right”. These tintype photographs were used during the Civil War to document the battle and the soldiers. And now Ed Drew is using this method to document the soldiers in his unit. In taking these tintypes it brings back something from when tintypes were being taken in the Civil War, “…So for me, it was trying to capture the essence of what those tintypists back in those days did, in my photos.”
