Should Health Professionals Assume that Race is biological?- Tamika Scriven

Yes and No. While race is undoubtedly not biological, there are some health issues that are prevalent amongst certain groups. For example, we accredit Sickle Cell as being a “Black” disease, Clef Lip and multiple limbs as being Indian disorders and mental illnesses as being a “White” thing, mainly because we see the same groups reporting these ailments more frequently than others. So with that being said, I do not think a doctor should make a diagnoses based solely on race but I do believe that one should take race (along with family history) into account.
