HW1: The Honda FCX Clarity

I would choose Tim Wallace as the photographer for The Honda FCX Clarity campaign rather than Don Dixon or Clint Clemens .Wallace photographs the car’s interior as well as exterior parts experimenting with various angles to portray the car as best as possible. He pays great attention to every detail thus revealing the cars as high quality vehicles through his photographs. His photography is very sharp and high in contrast. I believe this photographer would be the best for the campaign since his style is quite dramatic, modern as well as strong. Such a style is perfect for depicting The Honda FCX Clarity campaign that will show a completely new outlook on these cars and perhaps make the public see them as very luxurious, high end cars with this futuristic feel to them rather then view them as inferior.

Clint Clemens’s style is a little bit monotonous and predictable. All his photographs are alike, portraying the cars in motion on the road in full view. He doesn’t experiment much with angles, different perspectives, and lighting. All his shots are wide where the car is shown entirely placed in relation to its surroundings. There is no variation between close-up, mid, cut in shots etc. I think this campaign needs something new, fresh and contemporary that Wallace through his photography can offer.

Don Dixon’s photography is quite interesting but a little bit too artistic. I like his idea of thinking outside of the box and sometimes not necessarily portraying the car itself but for this campaign I think it should be a little more straightforward. Since the public already views The Honda FCX Clarity as inferior then it wouldn’t be best to not show the car at all and depict it through acrobats or an extreme close up of the road. Some of Dixon’s photographs do show the full view of the car in motion or portrayed by an interesting background that adds emphasis to the car but Wallace’s style still seems to be better for the campaign. Since Wallace’s photography is sharp, dramatic with dim lighting making the cars glow and seem powerful, this is what the campaign needs to persuade the public to view them as superior rather than inferior.

You do a great job here of distinguishing the styles of the three photographers. You are persuasive that Wallace is the right choice particularly when you link his lighting style to the “powerful” look you want to make people rethink this Honda.
