PART 1:
Today’s Power Point lecture topic will be about Dummy Books.
What are they?
Why do we make them?
What goes into a successful Dummy Book?
During the lecture I will also be analyzing both professional and past student examples of successful Dummy Books.
A question & answer session will follow the lecture, then a short 10 minute break.
Part 2:
Students will be presenting their 3 proposals for a 32 page Picture Book project.
Approximately 5 minutes will be allotted per student. During the proposals students must answer the following questions from last weeks assignment:
- Project Title
- Genre: What type of book will this be?
- Target Audience
- Why is this topic important to your target audience?
- Why do you think there is a market for this book?
- Concept/Manifesto : Explain the central theme in a few concise sentences. In essence, an elevator pitch.
- Market Research: Are there similar books in print? How would your book be different? Why are you the one to write& illustrate this book?
Part 2 will be split into 2 sessions with a 10 minute break in between.

Objectives
- To familiarize students with the of mechanics of a 32 page picture book dummy.
- Understanding industry standards as regards Dummy Books.
- Understanding the importance of Dummy Book creation as a method of visualizing a multi-component project.
- Understanding the various types of book formats.
- Understanding the differences between a standard 32 page trade book and a traditional 40 page book layout.
Activities
- After today’s Power Point Lecture, students will be presenting and brainstorming projects within a group setting.
- If time permits students can begin refining their proposals, and begin the writing process.
To-Do After Class: (Homework 2)
- Refine your proposals.
- Start writing your (0-800 word) manuscripts.
- Start sketching your character designs.
- Start breaking down your manuscript and thumb-nail the action.
