9/2 DO NOW challenge – ants on a stick

Just a reminder, there is a +10 homework bounty on the DO NOW question from today:

100 ants (zero-length points) walk on a meter stick (a line) at 1 cm/second. When two ants collide, they both reverse direction. If an ant reaches the end of the stick, it falls off. What arrangement of ants maximizes the time before all ants have fallen off? How long can they last?

To claim the points, be the first to submit a correct solution AND a proof (at this stage, let’s say a proof just means a clear explanation of why your solution is right). ¬†Submit either by email, by commenting here, or handing it in on paper.

END DATE: You have two weeks, ending 9/16/2014.

HONOR SYSTEM:¬†Please don’t search for this problem on the internet (or if you do, don’t claim the points).

Getting Started with WeBWorK

WeBWorK is accessible from on and off campus (anywhere you have access to the internet).  Your first two WeBWorK assignments are due on Tuesday, September 10th, at midnight, and will cover the material from the first two weeks of class (primarily from the second week).  Here’s what you have to do:

Assignment.  To get started , you must complete the following three steps.

Step 1.  Log in to WeBWorK here:  I have created Usernames and Passwords for each student registered for my class.

Username. ¬†Your username for WeBWorK consists of your first initial plus your last name, all lowercase (for example, John Smith would have username ‚Äėjsmith‚Äô).

Password. ¬†Your temporary password is the same as your username (if your username is ‘jsmith’, your password is currently ‘jsmith’).

Step 2. ¬†Change your password and update your email address. ¬†To do this, select ‚ÄúPassword/Email‚ÄĚ from the main menu on the left. ¬†Use whatever email address you like (I suggest using one that you check often).

Step 3.  Complete the first two assignments, titled Assignment1-Sec1.2-1.3 and Assignment2-Sec1.4-1.7. Click on an assignment on the main screen to get started.

If you have¬†any trouble¬†‚Äď either with logging in, or with completing the assignment, post a comment here or send me an email and I will get back to you.
