“Thanks Obama” originated as a sarcastic phrase used by Republicans to blame President Obama for the troubles and inconveniences on public policies supported or enacted by the administration. The original poster is of a young girl making a “middle finger” gesture with the caption “Thanks, Obama”
From there, it bacame a joke to blame Obama for everything for everything.
And if you can’t beat them, join them. My daughter showed me this skit where even Obama himself got in on the phenomenon and used it in his Buzzfeed video to show his normal side and connect to the youth.
So what started as a Republican hit on Obama and became a viral joke shared by politicians and the public alike.
