TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS IN MIXED NATIVE SPEAKER/ MLL COMPOSITION
by Professors Gertzog and Belknap

In this workshop, 1101 Co ML instructors Joshua Belknap and Rachel Gertzog present on best practices for teaching multi-language learners in a mixed native speaker/MLL classroom. Professor Gertzog’s segment considers the timeline design of the 1101 course from in-take/on-boarding, through each unit assignments, to the final reflection. Professor Belknap continues by briefly discussing the importance of persuading MLLs to attend one-on-one tutoring, differentiated instruction, deductive and inductive grammar teaching strategies, and written corrective feedback. Both segments include foundations in Second Language Acquisition theory informing their practices.
