Writing Assignment: Trolling

Trolling as a whole, is the act of making an offensive online post with the intentions of hurting, or getting an angry reaction out of another person. Trolling seems to be very mainstream, and examples can be shown in the media. As for celebrities such as musicians, actors, and actresses, trolling is done by so called haters. For example, according to Yahoo!, ā€œā€˜The Walking Deadā€™ Star Alanna Masterson Fires Back at Fat-Shaming Trollsā€¦ā€ Alanna Masterson has shown to be a victim of trolling. This article explains how after shooting an episode of The Walking Dead, Alanna received mass amounts of discrimination. Fat-shaming, is a form of discrimination in which a person is scrutinized due to their weight. Alanna was discriminated since she obtained some baby weight. After having her daughter, she posted to Instagram ā€œDear Instagram trolls, body shamers, and the men and woman who think it’s ok to comment on my weight: I hope that you don’t have children. And if you do, I hope you teach them about kindness and acceptanceā€ (Yahoo!). Basically Alanna took a shot back at the haters, not letting them bring her down. A clever yet inspiring response influenced her fans to show even more support. This is just one example of trolling, but these problems can be alleviated if we support one another.

Assignment 10

In their article ā€œTrolling: Who does it and why?ā€, Tom de Castella and Virginia Brown (2011) talks about the effect of trolling in modern times. They explain how trolling became part of an international phenomenon that includes cyber bullying. The Bill of Rights does not help solve this problem since, the first amendment protects free speech and makes it difficult to punish people for trolling online.Ā  The authors deduce that people cannot help when it comes to this type of crime. They explain that anyone is capable to become a troll. Many people want the satisfaction of someone noticing what they wrote and this gives them the motivation to write something ā€œemotional.ā€ Since laws are not updated to match cyber crime, it is hard for police to stop it. However, in recent years the police system has tried harder to combat menacing people who hide behind the screen. Ā The authors explain a way to combat the trolling in newspaper, websites and other media. They state that media forums should employ sufficient moderators to prevent the comments from becoming petty vendettas. Tom de Castella and Virginia Brown explains what trolling is, the examples of it and why people may do it. They also mention a way to combat trolling, since free speech should not be taken away. We need to find a way to better deal with trolling behind the screen.
