End prison rape

http://http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/13/us/push-to-end-prison-rapes-loses-earlier-momentum.html

A transgender woman whose gender identity has been challenged by the Texas authorities, Ms. Star herself is challenging Texas’ refusal to accept new national standards intended to eliminate rape in prison, which disproportionately affects gay and transgender prisoners.Last spring, Gov. Rick Perry declared in a letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. that Texas had its own “safe prisons program” and did not need the “unnecessarily cumbersome and costly” intrusion of another federal mandate.Ms. Star, who says she is a victim of repeated sexual harassment, coercion, abuse and assault in Texas’ maximum-security prisons for men, disagrees.

Waco slowly returns to normal after deadly biker brawl

Gang violence concerns all of us in every community. When we allow them to exist we are putting our families– especially our younger ones at risk. thankfully we are hearing less about gang violence nowadays but it is still a problem that needs more action taken against.

Police Patterns in Baltimore

http://http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/08/us/politics/justice-department-will-investigate-baltimore-police-practices-after-freddie-gray-case.html

The Justice Department will investigate whether the Baltimore Police Department engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional policing, law enforcement officials said on Thursday, a day after the mayor asked for an inquiry. “The situation in Baltimore involves a core responsibility of the Department of Justice — not only to combat illegal conduct when it occurs, but to help prevent the circumstances that give rise to it in the first place,” Ms. Lynch said on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

Death penalty for boston bomber

http://http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/16/us/dzhokhar-tsarnaev-death-sentence.html

After following the news with this issue I was a bit surprised that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received the death penalty. In my opinion a death penalty does not bring justice to the families of the victims. They will have to wait around for a long time before he is actually executed.

The Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev which happen in 2013 is facing 30 charges which 17 of the charges hold the death penalty. It took the jury 14 hours to decide on the charges. I don’t agree with the death penalty but I do feel in needs to spend the rest of is life in jail.

Plea deal in Bus attack on Gender neutral teen

http://http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2014/10/16/us/ap-us-bus-passenger-on-fire.html

After talking about this in class I went and did research on the issue myself. 17 year old Richard Thomas was prosecuted as an adult, entered the plea as part of a deal with prosecutors. He initially also was facing a hate-crime charge.Thomas is expected to be sentenced Nov. 14 to seven years in prison for setting the clothing of a gender neutral teen on fire on the bus. I believe that this is a very important issue in society concerning hate crimes on transgender individuals.
