Pragmatist by Edmund Conti

Apocalypse soon
Coming our way
Ground zero at noon
Halve a nice day.

This poem is a very short and interesting poem. This poem would be a good poem to write about on the final exam because if you go behind words and the stanza of the poem it gives you disturbing thoughts, yet humorous tone at the same time. Pragmatist is a movement consisting of varying but associated theories. And the poem gives a theory that the world is coming to an end. In the first three lines and the final line there is a tone switch. The first three lines are disturbing and give the reader a sense of feeling that the end is near. And then the last line “halve a nice day” gives a humor. Also that last sentence consists of a pun. “Halve a nice day” the poet said but also delivers the meaning of saying have a nice day. A reader can get a lot mixed and different feelings from this poem. This is a one stanza poem and it is perfect for the finals.

I really enjoyed this poem as well. The pun is “Halve a nice day” = ground zero is going down at noon, so the other half of the day will never happen and also “have a nice day” the way people say it. Even though it is disturbing as you said, it is still pretty amusing because despite speaking about the apocalypse, the author still ends the poem humorously. The poem is also 13 words long. Coincedence? hmmm
