Logo History

Since 1989

Obey Clothing is a popular clothing producing company founded in 2001 by street artist and illustrator Shepard Fairey. This brand is well known for incorporating politically and socially provocative propaganda. Obey Men’s is designed by Mike Ternosky and Obey Women’s is designed by Grace Lee. The OBEY font is ‘Futura Std Condensed Extra Bold Oblique’, with tight kerning. Obey clothing is made in China, like jackets, jeans, jeans, and hats are made in Asia. On the other hand, 95% of the tee shirts are made and printed in the U.S. In Bible Obey means “to trust” and “to hear God’s Word and act accordingly”

OBEY was founded by Shepard Fairey, he started Obey by an absurd sticker he created in 1989 during his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. Now obey is a worldwide street art campaign, and as well as an acclaimed body of fine art.

After Shepard Fairey made the stickers, he started street activities, aiming to copy as many images as possible in as many places as possible. First, he put stickers on his own. Later, his friend joined him. In the end, this image can be seen not only in many parts of the United States but also abroad. Today, Fairey often publishes his information in publications such as skateboards and music magazines, which are mainly read by people between the ages of 15 and 25.

OBEY means Do It Yourself, its counterculture of punk rock and skateboarding, but it also draws cues from the popular culture. Fairey steeps his ideology and iconography in self-empowerment. With the irony of reverse psychology, he uses the imperative “obedience” to guide the audience, paying attention to the propagandists bending the world to their agenda.

OBEY Clothing was formed in 2001 as an extension of Shepard’s range of work. It another canvas to spread his art and message to the people. It’s inspired by classic military design, work wear basics. OBEY started to get stocked at big retailers such as PacSun, Urban Outfitters. Then it starts to go disappear cause a lot of other brand pops up and Obey is no longer “Obey was an instant hit among skaters and streetwear kids.”

Obey quotes

OBEY is about variety and experience, thinking about your surroundings and questioning the purpose. The medium is the message.

World famous artist Shepard Fairey is a contemporary illustrator/designer who appears in skating scenes. He was mainly known for creating the “AndrétheGiant Has a Posse” street event, and later developed into an obedient movement in language and style. The concept of the event is to create a “phenomenological experiment.” Shepard Fairey created the iconic image of the wrestler’s face to complement the iconic brand to OBEY. Fairey uses the “OBEY” slogan as a direct tribute to the slogan found in John Carpenter’s cult classic “Their Life.” The OBEY movement tries to inspire curiosity and ask people to question their relationship to the environment. The Obey Giant event called on its fans to smear in public places in public places with mysterious posters and stickers containing the OBEY GIANT logo. The OBEY giant is widely known for its murals, stencils and large posters, from street signs and abandoned building faces to public spaces such as bus stop posters and billboards. Today, the popular Obey Giant logo design continues to replicate on a wide variety of products, from home accessories and accessories to apparel and greatly expands the impact of OBEY activities through imagery based on loyal media and popular culture.

The original Obey logo placed the central part of André’s face in a square. Below, you can see the white “Obey” on a red background.

The giant’s face can also be in a star. In this case, his features merge with the stars in an unusual and compelling way. In another version of the star emblem, the logo is placed in a red circle with a bold outline. Obey clothing now worth 15 million.

Wordmark is also commonly used as a stand-alone logo. The letters are white, and the background can be black or red. Although there are many other versions, they are not as frequently used as mentioned above.

I learned that obey clothing was separated into two parts, one designer design for women and one design for men. Also, the starter of Obey was different than I thought. This connects to art and even spread art to different people from a different area.
