At the Society of Illustrators, I came in contact with many great Art pieces. The one that drew my attention the most was the piece by Gérard Dubois. The piece was called Constructing the Modern Mind, the client was Science American Mind Magazine. Gérard has worked with many magazines both in the United States and varies places around the world. His ability to tackle complex issues with grace and power, has let him be a favorite among Art Directors. Gérard uses a foundation pen for his rough drafts following by a touch of acrylic and ending with a scans, to finish digital. Gérard was born in Paris, but later moved to Montreal to continue his practice, where he resigns still today.
The work he did for the Science American Mind Magazine impacted me the most, because I also find the mind a very complex thing to illustrate. The work he did was a create way to express the mind as a foggy, cloudy place, where ideas and illusion can be very difficult to understand. The quote “Unlike any other empirical object in Nature, the mind’s presence is immediately apparent to itself, but opaque to all external observers.” by George Makari was what inspired Gérard to such a meaningful illustration to the message George meant.
