  1. Hendrix views illustration as storytelling and a form of communication. He defines illustrators as contributors and shapers of culture. The work illustrators do acts as a springboard for so many things, whether it bringing to life our favorite children’s book character or starting an important dialog.  Hendrix calls illustration a “powerful, profound, and unpretentious shaper of our visual lives”. Illustration is very accessible and we are surrounded by its influence whether we seek it out or not.

What he meant was that we as artist are able to create something that can influence the world with our art. Along with changing peoples views we are also changing the lives of the people that see our illustrations. The power of being able to give life to a story.

He wants people to understand that illustration is communication and that it is not just the basic things that people label it as. He doesn’t want other people in our field to always be seen as the next competition but, as potential partners. We Illustrators are contributors!

Reading this article has made me even prouder of the career choice I’ve made and hope to leave my mark in it.

It affects every person who reads the New Yorker or reads children books to their kids every night before bedtime. Illustration is everywhere. That’s why sometimes people don’t take an illustrator as a career. When we see an illustration we don’t think about the person behind it. We just look for the message within the illustration.

All around us are more and more screens and surfaces and thus the need for images is increasing because we are a very visual in our lives. Illustration can be interpreted differently and a single image can shape a persons opinion so it is a very powerful way we shape our lives. I agree with what Julie said in that we should not feel embarrassed about this field anymore since it is so important and has such an impact.

  8. I agree with John Hendrix’s observation and thoughts on the career of being and illustrator as a whole. I think that we as illustrators should not censor ourselves and not look to be better than the next person. Instead I think that we should come together and work together to bring out the messages and stories that we are trying to produce because this is our culture. Illustration has a big impact with society today since most things are visually based.

Sending the messages that we want through the images we created, show them to the public and receive feedback. Illustration can be simple or complex, but I think it is something that has visual impacts to people. It’s a creation combines illustrators’ ideas,imaginations and the message itself; not only show people what they see from the illustration, but also make people to think, to imagine, and to go deeper beyond the image itself.

In our discourse, illustrators, artists and all the people of art in general have always been part of the elite, because they could earn more and, accordingly, live better. We did not have such a difference of opinion in relation to artists, depending on in which area they work.
