The internship I am working at is called NYPIRG, it’s a public research organization that is nonprofit and fights for issues that stems from many categories, mainly strengthening democracy, enhance the rights of consumers and voters, and protect the environment and public health.
Its main clients are everyday New Yorkers and have been educating thousands of them and recruiting many of them so that they can bring the voices of average New Yorkers to public policy debates.
NYPIRG was founded in 1976 as an independent and public outreach organization.
They have chapters all across multiple CUNYs and SUNYs within the state of New York and they have one office on the 4th floor right inside City Tech campus as well.
Recently they just reached their 50th year anniversary of work in the public interest and were doing a award ceremony called the organization’s “Changemaker” Award to give to mutiple recognized activist doing a great service to their community.
Another recent topic that NYPIRG covered was when they went to Albany and talked to many politicians over the issue of Climate Change, and how these giant corporations that directly contribute the most to it, should have to cover the cost of Climate Change. According to a report by NYPIRG, it says Big Oil is at fault for climate change, and it can certainly afford the costs – which are uniquely necessary – and expensive – in New York. Since 2021, Big Oil companies have reaped nearly $750 billion in profits.
