Advanced College Writing
Reading and Writing Assignment 1
What is this Class About?

First, please read the following three texts:

1. Charles Bazerman’s “Reacting to Reading: An Introduction to Keeping a Reading Journal”
2. Our Course Syllabus
3. Pages from Technology: A Reader for Writers handed out in class (The Preface and Introduction to Ch. 1; Thomas P. Hughes’ “Defining Technology”; Eric Schatzberg’s “What Is Technology?”)

Then, using a separate sheet, or sheets of paper, please respond to the following questions. This is informal writing, meaning the form and voice in which you reply is quite open ended. If possible, please type up and print out your responses to Questions 1, 2, and 3, using MLA formatting guidelines and making sure to read over your responses at least once before handing in the assignment.

1. Please write one to three paragraphs about what you learned about college writing in ENG1101.
2. Please write one to three paragraphs about what elements of college writing you would particularly like to work on in this advanced college writing course.
3. Please read over our course syllabus. Do you have any questions about it? If so, please list them. We will be talking about these in our class on Tuesday.
4. After reading Bazerman’s “Reacting to Reading,” read and take notes on the readings from Technology: A Reader for Writers in your Reading Journal. We will be discussing these readings in Tuesday’s class.
5. Do you have any questions about the readings?  Please make a note of them.  If there are any words or phrases that were unfamiliar to you also make a note of these and try looking up their definitions in a dictionary.
