KWL assignment

A topic I want to learn more about is racism, police brutality and how bad it is affecting society today.

  • Police brutalityĀ
  • RacismĀ
  • AbortionĀ

I know racism is discriminating against someone based on there race, unfair treatments towards an individual. Racism happens everyday whether itā€™s in school, a student making fun of you because of your skin color or how dark you are, or applying for a job. They jump to conclusions based on your name because it sounds ghetto.

Ā Can we stop racism?

iā€™ve learned a lot about police brutality over the pandemic protest over protest went on about black lives matter, over social media like instagram, twitter #blackouttuesday. It was a protest about racism and police brutality against black people. It was a response to the incident of Gerge Floyd, and Breonna taylor. Police brutality is a force of law enforcement against a person, black people have been the race to go through this, so many people black people have lost their lives because of white police men. Itā€™s not only the police itā€™s everyone discriminating black people, saying there bad, there gang members, they do drugs. Even me as a black personality, when I go into a store I always buy something so the people donā€™t think I’m stealing. They even follow me around, black people arenā€™t safe anywhere.

I want to learn more about those two topics, how it has ruined society, and changed how people think today even little kids.

KWL HW for 10/13

Why are Zoos still a thing?

K- I know that Zoos hold captured animals. People go there to look at the animals. I always found it messed up because the animals are basically trapped there just for humanā€™s entertainment. There is a difference between a Zoo and a sanctuary for animals. Because some people like to say that Zoos help animals and keep them safe. But if youā€™re visiting a Zoo to go see those animals and are paying for it, then the Zoo is there for your amusement and profit, not for the animal.

W- I want to know how many Zoos there are in the US to begin with, but Iā€™m also curious how many there are around the world. I donā€™t think thereā€™s too many of them in other countries, so I want to see how many more the US has. Iā€™d also like to know where the idea came from. Who first thought to create a Zoo? Where were they from? How did become so normalized that people thought it was okay? Has anyone tried to close Zoos or try to turn them into just sanctuaries? Are Zoos still open just for the profit? Are people ever going to agree to get rid of Zoos or will society continue to be selfish and want to keep them for their amusement?

L- I learned that the idea for Zoos started in Egypt and Mesopotamia. The wealthy would have private collections of animals to show their wealth. The first Zoo opened in Paris, France. During the 18th century the ā€œAge of Enlightenmentā€, scientists wanted to study animalā€™s anatomy and behavior. So, they had to keep them in places that mirrored the natural habit.

Still want to know- Iā€™d still like to know where the first Zoo in the US opened and when. Also, who is in charge of the Zoos and how they play a part in the treatment of the animals?
