Homework for 9/6

What Mike Bunn means by the phrase, “You are already an author.” is that we are all writers at some capacity, big or small.Ā  I already write in terms of sending emails and responses to professors and my superiors at work. I write all the time texting my friends on different social media services.Ā  In these two separate instances I write professionally to school people and job people, and then much more casually to my friends.Ā  This skill allows me to prioritize how to talk to which people in order to get the most out of everything that I am writing to them.Ā  Writing formally to a superior with good vocabulary will net me more points with them and they will look upon me better then employees who do not. It will show my level of verbal skill and be equated to that of an actual educated person who in turn will be more valuable to the job and more likely to be invested in for promotions in the future.

In my writing, I would like to be descriptive in my approach to how I present information.Ā  Specifically, just like Bunn, I wish to describe in great detail the settings of places, just like he did with the old movie theater and how he was describing very particular things about it like the place it was located, who owned it, and what it was like inside.Ā  I want to convey a true sense of imagery in my writing so that people know exactly what I am talking about.Ā  In order to do that, I will most definitely have to spend a few sentences just writing about the details of a place I am talking about, an object I am looking at or handling, an action that is taking place, etc. Depending on certain things it may or may not be appropriate of necessary to be constantly describing things lest it becomes repetitive and an overused feature, but it makes things more meaningful in the long run.

Hw for Tuesday 9/6

The goal in the article is to read like a writer. Iā€™m already an author, I have writing experience and knowledge. I was taught how to write an essay or story step by step. from rough drafts to hard copies. How to start an introduction, body paragraphs, and end a conclusion. We are authors every day whether it’s from texting my friends, tweeting on Twitter, love letters, or emailing a professor. I form my own beliefs like authors do. Words play a big part in my life, it’s a way I communicate, and express my feelings. Words are very strong, they can make people smile or even hurt someone. My reading and writing skills will help me not only in college but in the future. I will be more open-minded and have a clear head and my writing will be flowing. It can help me communicate with students in the calls anytime I need their help, or if it’s a group project. Passing my classes will be easy, and my learning will be better, solving problems on my own, just being able to adapt anywhere I go. Even on a regular day learning to approach an argument. In Bunnā€™s article, I noticed how he started an essay with a quote I would like to try to grab the reader’s attention. Iā€™m a very indecisive person so the pros and cons list would be perfect, I would be able to point out and pick a side.

HW for Tuesday 9/6 – Saif S.

When Mike Bunn writes ā€œYou are already an authorā€ he is acknowledging our previous academic writings. Before attending college it is obvious that we have written numerous stories, articles, papers, texts, etc. The majority of my writing was done in sixth grade and throughout high school.

The reason I bring up sixth grade was that my entire year of writing was dedicated to argumentative writing and structure. We studied and practiced rigorously in order to perfect our ability to construct an argumentative writing piece. I can remember the many ways I would attempt to bullshit the assignments. I think part of the procrastination actually helped me because, in the end, I was forced to learn the skills quickly and apply them efficiently.

In high school, the majority of my English classes focused on academic writing, such as practicing for the regent’s exam, research papers, historical texts, poetry, older literature, and reviewing student writing. In my opinion, it was a lot more boring than what I did in sixth grade, however, it did equip me with a more sophisticated writing skillset. Breaking it down, it was pretty much essay after essay after essay. Anyways, that’s the summary of my writing experience.

I believe that a conversation is a form of authorship.ā€œHow to Read Like a Writerā€ by Mike Bunn, talks about how we should learn to orient our writing strategies in order to address our audience more efficiently. We do this more often than we realize. The language we use to communicate with our parents is usually different than what we would use around our friends.

I think something interesting in Bunn’s article was when he suggested the reader go back in the text and reread certain areas. I feel like that’s a very effective gesture to help your audience understand your point. If possible I would like to try that in a future writing piece. I tend to have difficulty translating my thoughts into words so I believe that utilizing this technique would be beneficial to me and my audience.
