KNOW-YOUR-PUBLICATION QUESTIONS // Unit 3 Schedule

Part 1

Look for places your writing could be published (or posted) and answer these questions for that publication forum.  Remember, this doesn’t have to be a magazine (though it can be!) but you should start getting a little specific! If you’re writing a short story, look at a collection of short stories.  If you’re making a YouTube video, look at a particular channel, etc…

  • What kinds of articles/ stories/ media  (and ads and videos for that matter) are on that site?
  • What does that tell you about who they think their audience is? How do you draw that conclusion?
  • How long are the pieces usually? (pages, words, minutes)?
  • What is the tone, usually? (funny, serious, casual)
  • What kind of diction is usually used? (casual, formal, academic, etc.)
  • How do they usually use evidence/ support (such as data, quotations, interviews, etc)?
  • What can you tell us about their visual presentation?  Is it all black and white text? Video with lots of graphics?
  • Do you think this would be a good publication or forum to reach your intended audience?  Why or why not?

If you have a particular genre you want to write in, but you haven’t been able to find a forum where it would be published or posted, don’t immediately switch genres! Talk to me first– I’m sure we can find something.

Part 2

Unit 3 Proposal – Saif S.

The most important thing is that the process of terraforming is doable. We may not be able to be there for it’s effects but we can get a start on the process. I am trying to address this to those with unsure career choices and astronomy majors. Personally, I feel like these kind of people can benefit from the information I am providing sure to their careers. I am planning to make a YouTube video. I already have some experience in video making and I also feel like a video will be a digestible piece of content for my audience. I can write a script or outline in Google docs and upload the video to YouTube. To start I would have to make an outline on key ideas and sub ideas I want to convey. I do feel like I can grab additional sources for information so I will be sure to look for those. After listing down my ideas, I will try to find pictures and/or gifs that will help convey my information to the watcher. After I will record myself speaking and edit the pictures and gifs over it to make a video. A question I have is if we do make a video is there a minimum time requirement?

Unit 3 Proposal

I’d like to teach my audience the psychological effect that social media is having on us as a population. Also, how it can impact your brain while you are growing up. I want to go over the positives and negatives of social media and being on them constantly or all day. Its something we all have access to so I believe the audience can relate to it. I want my message to appeal to an audience of people around my age. We are all practically glued to our phones and its important to know if its even good for us in the long term. The genre which applies to this is nonfiction and informational. Id put the writing out on a social media post and websites. I believe that through the internet, it’s the best possible way of conveying the message and facts. I would get started by reading my unit 2 and refreshing myself on my topic. I’d also dive deeper into the topic and see if I can learn anything further than what I already know. My concern is that it won’t be fun for other people to read. Also, im worried that it won’t come out to what I imagine it being, it could be worse in the end. I want to write an outline so it can guide and help me.
