Topics and Ideas HW 9/13

One of the topics I would like discussing in my Unit 1 assignment is when I used to dedicate myself to basketball back in middle school. At that point of time, what will help me stay focused and be good in school was being on the team. Our coach was a sporty guy who understood the importance of school and education. Knowing that, in order to play or stay on the team was to do good in every class and he would check in with the teachers often. I feel like this is a good topic to write about because I feel it combines the aspects of both education and personal narratives, since in order to do an activity I loved, I had no choice but to pursue a good education lifestyle.

A worldwide experience that everyone has been through is of course  COVID-19. Even though it’s a shared event with many people, each person has experienced something specific and unique to their own respect. I feel this is a very good topic to touch on in my assignment because I can talk about transitions in my life consisting of a change of interests, appearance, personality, education, etc. A lot has gone on during quarantine that I can talk about in fine details. Overall, it taught me more about myself and turned into a new person.

Another topic that expands on both of the previous topics I discussed is getting into my current interest in technology. To elaborate, exploring into the field of learning different programs, graphic design, as well development/coding. My love for basketball faded away during the quarantine since we had to be inside all day so I couldn’t go out and play. I’m appreciative of both that loss of interest and quarantine because it helped me find my love for tech. I feel this is a good idea to write about because everything connects and leads up to today, which I feel can get really personal and detailed.

Education Narrative 9/8

From what I’ve seen so far, the conventions of the education narrative genre are figures of speech, culture/background, there’s a setting of realization, discovering your peace/ a solution to your problem, and a personal connection/ information. A place to get started on my own education narrative is to recall a past point in my life where maybe I’ve realized the significance of education, or at a time where I’ve struggled when it came to either education or school. I could also maybe explain my family background and how most of them struggled when it came to education, but those who succeeded, I was inspired and motivated to pursue education myself. A setting could be in the classroom or somewhere personal. Using figures of speech is also key because to me, I feel like it’s appealing to the reader when you add some sort of element/ technique when speaking of something personal. Somewhere personal would help the reader connect to my writing better so I feel like it would be best to do that. One concern I have is manipulating my past, because of course I don’t have perfect memory, so I would have to put it in a way where it makes sense. Another concern I have is that I can’t recall any instance where the solution to my educational issues is related to poetry. It seems that poetry has tied in all of the examples we’ve seen so far, so hopefully I can use something else as my remedy.

RLW HW 9/6

When Bunn states, “You are already an author.” Which is referring to me, the reader, I believe he means that I may not be aware of it but I already have the experiences and skills when it comes to writing. In my everyday life, I text/write to my friends and family. Some cases, I’d have to email, in most cases in a formal manner.
I feel having this existing expertise will help me in my college reading and writing career because I’m able to implement techniques that I already use on a daily basis.
To elaborate, I am able to differentiate between writing formally and informally. Depending on who I’m talking to, such as a friend, no need for formality if we are well acquainted, as well as around the same age. Maybe it’s my grandmother I have to send a text to, I’d have to understand our age and relationship. I wouldn’t speak to her if she was a stranger nor would I as if she was a stranger. It’s all about understanding a balance of the situation, as well as the mood. Is the conversation something serious? If so, I can’t just crack a joke out of no where. Adapting and connecting emotionally seem to be crucial when it comes to writing. One thing I’ve noticed in Bunn’s article that I would to try in my own writing is appealing to the reader. Understanding the technique on how to connect to the reader as well presenting your work in a way that makes sense but on paper it doesn’t, I would definitely like to try. Like how in the beginning of the article starts off in a way where you’re probably thinking you’re reading the wrong text but then you could start to understand how it all connects.
