KWL+ on Domestic Violence

Know: Physical abuse among a family counts as domestic violence. Domestic violence can impact the children of the household by increasing the chance of them committing violence in their future household as well as in school. Domestic violence can lower a child’s self esteem. Domestic violence is illegal.

Want: I’d like to know if domestic violence goes beyond physical abuse. Does domestic violence go beyond the household? Is it illegal in most if not all countries? I’m stuck. What are the typical punishments for domestic violence? Is it more common for males to commit this crime? What age group typically commits this crime?

Learned: Domestic violence includes verbal, physical, emotional, psychological damage, etc. Economic domestic violence occurs when there is a restriction of economic resources to which one is entitled. Denying medical care counts as physical abuse. Domestic violence seems to only include intimate partners and children, rather than others like friends. Women appear to suffer from domestic violence. This crime can occur in any type of relationship (heterosexual, homosexual, etc). Some countries in Asia and Africa do not have laws against domestic violence (Haiti, Pakistan, etc). Typical punishment for domestic violence include Jail time (usually about a year), or fines (1k-5k).

Still want to know: Is there any form of compensation to victims of domestic violence? Is domestic violence more common to occur to children or adults? What are the other side effects to commiting domestic violence (sex offenders must tell their neighborhoods)?

I believe that when Mike Bunn writes “You are already an author.”, he means that we use writing skills in our everyday life. For instance, when I ask my mother for anything, it’s likely that I use persuasive writing techniques. Techniques such as knowing my audience and mentioning pros and cons to my point. Another example of everyday writing techniques would be the assignments I get in my classes. I have written letters, reflections, research papers, etc. I already am an author because I create writing and almost, if not always, convey a message through my writing. Like in my academic writing, I usually give a small peek into who I am, that could be the “message”. This “authorship” that I already have can help me in my college reading/writing career by allowing me to improve on my past mistakes and be able to understand my audience more.

Something I would like to use of Bunn’s in my own writing would be perhaps a somewhat personal tone. Bunn adds a sort of comedic comment on pg. 71, paragraph 2. “I was pretty sure that if there was any trouble I’d be running down the back stairs, leaving the patrons to fend for themselves. I had no intention of dying in a bright red tuxedo”. I believe sections like this, adds a somewhat personal connection to the reader perhaps, which can result in keeping their attention. I would like to add this to my writing more to keep myself as well as the reader a bit more interested.

Dear end-of-the-semester self,

By the time I reach you, I hope to have accomplished my goals of improving as a writer and student overall. Specifically, I’d like to improve on my precision skills when it comes to writing. I usually write and don’t look back on what I created, but I’d like to start revising my work at least once or twice to proofread a bit to hopefully make sure my message is being conveyed correctly. As a student I’d like to improve on my time management skills and not procrastinate To leave things for last minute. Writing can potentially help me with this goal a bit because if I see a task as somewhat difficult or annoying to do, I’m sure to leave it for later, but if my writing improves It’s likely that I’ll be able to complete the assignments on time.

Love, beginning-of-semester self
