May 2016– “Head Start Fluoride Varnish Program” at 8886 26th Str., Family Head Start, Brooklyn, NY 11214. During our visit to one of the Head Start Centers, our group was being introduced to a small class of 12-14 children from low income families, age of 3-4 years. They were very friendly to us and were willing to learn more about teeth. Our role as a hygienist contained brief assessment of a child’s dentition, age, pathology, presence of ECC in the dentition, standard planning/ implementation – OHI of proper brushing and nutrition counseling and application of fluoride Varnish 5%, and evaluation and a referral-bringing to the parents attention if a child is under care of a dentist, or need to be seen by a dentist.  The program gave us an experience working with the young population, interactive communication and be a part of public screening.

Spring 2016 – Service learning field project activity “Implementing Oral Health Education in Low income Hispanic Community” at  Church “Iglesia Pentecostal El Camino”, located on 416 46th St, Brooklyn, NY 11220.  Our goal was to improve oral health awareness in the Hispanic community.  We established priorities in oral health education of this particular community, such as lack of information of the basic oral care. Our objectives were to demonstrate to the community how to maintain basic oral health in an affordable way in order to prevent oral diseases.

I would definitely consider myself as a public health promoter in the future and wouldn’t mind of taking part in volunteering program to visit Family Centers or Public Organization like this.
