Uraban Artifacts Phase 1

obvious figure/ground relationship

Exploring around the campus of City Tech I found this metro card. As it was discarded publicly, you can see from a art point of view that one’s man person trash is another one’s treasure. This being said I was able to identity this card as stable, The metro card has a flat surface with pointed and directed line fragments which allow it to has a specific shape. I would classify this metro card with more of a rectangle shape. Furthermore after careful examination this would be geometric.
The background history of this metro card can come from thousands of different ways. However I believe I know the true findings behind it. This story begins with James; on a regular school day James takes the bus to school, Although he usually has a monthly metro he forgot to refill it. This being said James had to use quarters, nickels, and dimes to travel. As James was taking the bm2 to school he realized he didn’t have a way back home. This being said James asked for a transfer, the item you see in this image. I and many know a transfer has a two hour limit, but James didn’t know he’ll be in school longer than expected which led to it being expired.

Uraban Artifacts Phase 1

obvious figure/ground relationship

As on the road of exploring the streets of New York I found a iconic figure that many people use. I found a cigarette; this cigarette has more of a geometric shape. I believe in the shape of my findings due to the whole circular formation of this precise  item would let anyone know it’s geometric, especially if you’re a common user. Also due to the frame of this image the cigarette can be identified as a stable figure/ground relationship. This would be due to the outline of the picture; there’s a dark background which allows the cigarette to make a clear representation of itself in the image.
I imagine as if the cigarette was found in a local corner store. The pack was bought by a businessman in the local area, the pack he bought was Newport since that was the last one the shelves. Once buying a fresh new pack the man decides to attend to his addiction by lighting one up. As the man of the purchase is fully enjoying his cigarette, he admires every pull he takes. While smoking he realizes that he’s late to work, however Bob forgot that his wife used up majority of the gas in the car nor filled it up. Due to this misshapen Bob was forced call a cab leading to the fallout to him putting out his cigarette and leaving it on the floor barley smoked.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 3

Inking on Bristol – Obvious F/G

Inking on Bristol – Ambiguous F/G

Throught the project, we are taught the differences between figure & ground and how their relationship—through their difference in ratio—can create an ambiguous or an obvious figure. An ambiguous figure has many shapes, an even ratio, and makes the viewer see more than one image within the presentation. An obvious figure is more of one versus the other; it has an uneven ratio and can definitely show the difference between figure and ground.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 3

In this part of the project we develop the final version of our Ambiguous figure/ground  and Obvious figure/ground sketches from our refined version in phase 2.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 1

Ambiguous Figure/Ground

A large spatter of paint on the ground. Accidentally created by a painter dropping a can of paint. In a rush to start a job. Dark organic texture with smaller splatter marks surrounding. At the top it shows a more heavier thicker amount of paint. Shade an becomes smaller an slight lighter at the bottom.

Ambiguous Figure/Ground

Here is dirt from a planted tree. Showing the weather is changing to a cooler temperature. The dirt is dry with organic textures of leaves, twigs, rocks an soil fragments.

Ambiguous Figure/Ground

Someone wanted to be creative on the city streets of New York with some spray paint. Creating a flow of organic lines with different colors. There is no specific direction on how the artist is moving the spray paint.

Obvious Figure/Ground

A bright yellow orange leaf fallen to the ground on a brisky day. Recognition that fall will be here soon. The leaf is the figure of this obvious figure/ground image. The color an shape stands out as a geometric form.

Obvious Figure/Ground

Someone just tossed this card. After being approached by a advocator for the New York speed limit. It has a geometric shape of a square on the ground.

Obvious Figure/Ground

Foil from a gum wrapper that has been walked on many times. Geometric rectangular shape of the foil.
