Sound Visualizations: Phase 1

In this piece of music there are a lot of different sounds. The music starts off with a low slow rhythm. Gradually elevating into a high pitch upbeat  rhythm that flows and brings all the elements together.

There is an electric sound of a piano that creates waves of smooth flowing lines. With a pattern scaling up and down.  There is also a heavy  beat of a drum creating rough bass with circles, all the same size in a pattern. The guitar gives me a feel of a smooth whimsical spiral circle, that continues to go around starting small and becoming larger in shape.  All the sounds repeat themselves on a count of 4 moving up and down maintaining the rhythm.

Listening to the sounds I comprehend the intentions of the artist. Which was to produce a romantic love song, yet an electric upbeat contemporary that makes you move.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 4

This project gave me a better comprehensive hands on experience on the Design Process. There is much more to designing than I perceived. You have to have an open mind to everything around you. There is obvious and ambiguous figure ground relationships all around you. Some figures geometric like a street sign in the sky, others organic as various shapes of gum on the ground.

In the beginning of this project I misunderstood how to find bring unity between my images. It took refining my thumbnails  with framing an cropping, to narrow my options down that still had no relation.  During the critique I received very positive feedback. The group made a good observation, that just adding more to my obvious figure/ground image, I could establish a better image for the  ambiguous figure/ground image. Which helped to bring the unity of now two organic shapes.

In the next project I will do my best not to think as literal. To open my eyes as an artist more because the answer to my problem was directly in my face. Thank you for all the critiques!

Urban Artifacts: Phase 3

Obvious Figure/Ground

Ambiguous Figure/Ground Inked

Ambiguous Figure/Ground Inked revised

My last image is a revised version for ambiguous figure ground. The first and second image were not unified as figures. I used my obvious figure/ground image to create my  new image, both are now organic figures.

I took 2 1/2 hours for this part of the project. With this phase we had to transform the refined images into inked images.

I worked on this part of the project for 2 hrs.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 1

Ambiguous Figure/Ground

A large spatter of paint on the ground. Accidentally created by a painter dropping a can of paint. In a rush to start a job. Dark organic texture with smaller splatter marks surrounding. At the top it shows a more heavier thicker amount of paint. Shade an becomes smaller an slight lighter at the bottom.

Ambiguous Figure/Ground

Here is dirt from a planted tree. Showing the weather is changing to a cooler temperature. The dirt is dry with organic textures of leaves, twigs, rocks an soil fragments.

Ambiguous Figure/Ground

Someone wanted to be creative on the city streets of New York with some spray paint. Creating a flow of organic lines with different colors. There is no specific direction on how the artist is moving the spray paint.

Obvious Figure/Ground

A bright yellow orange leaf fallen to the ground on a brisky day. Recognition that fall will be here soon. The leaf is the figure of this obvious figure/ground image. The color an shape stands out as a geometric form.

Obvious Figure/Ground

Someone just tossed this card. After being approached by a advocator for the New York speed limit. It has a geometric shape of a square on the ground.

Obvious Figure/Ground

Foil from a gum wrapper that has been walked on many times. Geometric rectangular shape of the foil.
