BUF 2400: Product Development In Fashion

Course Description: An introduction to the study of product development from concept to consumer. In this course, students will learn how research is conducted in the fashion industry and how it is ultimately reflected in garment design. Trend cycles, consumer behavior, social, political, and economic influences are discussed as influences on trend development.

BUF 2255: Merch Planning and Buying

Course Description: The course exposes you (the student) to the mathematical concepts, techniques and analysis, which are fundamental to the buying and planning process.  Retailing encompasses business functions to first procure goods from a manufacturer and later distribute and sell these goods to the end user or consumer.  Many of these processes are highlighted upon using mathematical problems and interactive learning techniques.  Upon successfully completing this course, you will understand how retailers systematically maximize return on investment, through planning sales and inventory to increase profitability.  Students will become aware of the importance of maximizing sales potential and minimizing losses from markdowns and stock outs.  Finally, students should be able to explain the financial operation of retail merchandising and apply these principles in basic computer-simulated case situations.

BUF 2246: Textile

Course Description: This course is an introductory survey of today’s complex and consistently transforming fashion and textiles business environment. A survey of fashion wholesale and retail environments will be explored to offer students a clear understanding of various textiles types with an emphasis on its interaction with fashion merchandisers, buyers, and retailers. Students acquire basic knowledge of fibers, yarns, cloth construction, finishes, and embellishments necessary to determine quality and to make appropriate fabric choices for contemporary fashion apparel and home furnishings.

BUF 2203: Visual Merchandising

An exploration of visual merchandising through the consideration of product presentation in the retail environment. Investigates the theoretical and practical use of in-store environments, lighting, special effects, fixtures and product placement as a form of visual communication intended to convey a specific message about the fashion brand and to influence the consumer. Topics include the creation of specialty and department store displays, the design of visuals for walls and windows, professional presentation techniques, and the effects of color, music and lighting on consumer behavior.

BUF 1101: Intro to the Fashion Industry

Course Description: The course introduces you to the elements of merchandising in the fashion industry. It encompasses the major segments of fashion merchandising: textile mills; designers and manufacturers as well as other producers; auxiliary fashion industries; and retailers. The role of technology, and the dynamics of fashion retailing in the age of the Internet, is also emphasized. Students will develop an understanding of how the business of fashion has evolved into the fast-paced multimedia global entity that we witness today. Consequently, whenever possible, you will be expected to adopt visual merchandising technologies and multimedia techniques for your activities in this course. Aspects of 21st century marketing are integral to an understanding of this subject.

SBS 3201: Gender, Dress and Society

Course Description: The study of theories related to appearance, clothing, and fashion, and their influences on cultural identities, gender perceptions, and fashion product consumption. Examines contemporary dress from cultures outside and within the United States. Dress is analyzed as a communication system that indicates individuality as well as position within specific social systems of kinship, economy, religion, and polity. Technologies and types of dress of a particular society are analyzed and understood as they link to patterns of behavior such as beliefs about morality, hygiene, ritual, and beauty.
