Below are additional assignments you can complete for homework in order to earn additional points towards your grade. You may NOT submit more than 30 points work of assignments. Earned points are not put toward your overall grade but can be either used towards your participation, test, or project grade at Prof. Shanbhag’s discretion.

Assignments

  1. Re-Do (10 pts)
    • You can use this opportunity to re-do any ONE of the following:
      • ONE test
      • ANY previously submitted HW assignment (NOT projects)
        • Has to have been counted towards a Participation Grade
      • Type Hero Presentation (an opportunity to re-earn the points you lost).
    • This opportunity can only be redeemed once. If you want to do this, talk to Prof. Shanbhag to coordinate. Due to the nature of this task, resubmission has to be perfect.
  2. Scavenger Hunt (10 pts)
    • Look For:
      • 3 examples Bold text next to regular text
      • 3 examples Condensed Typeface in use
      • 3 examples Italic text next to regular text
    • Submit all examples in a 3 page PDF (one page for Bold text, one page for Condensed Typeface, and one page for Italic )
      • Label each page with its category.
      • Name PDF: LastName_FirstName_Bonus_ScavengerHunt
  3. Logomark (10 pts)
    • Using ONLY type (no images, no graphics/shapes), create a mark using your initials.
    • Black and white, no color
    • 8″ x 8″
    • Submit as a PDF
      • Name PDF: LastName_FirstName_Bonus_Logomark
  4. Typeset Content (20 pts)
    • Typeset the content linked here.
    • Final submission must:
      • Either be a poster (18″ x 24″) OR book spread (TWO 5.5″ x 8.5″ pages, side by side).
      • Use ALL provided content in linked PDF
      • There has to be an organized and recognizable hierarchy of information.
        • Expressive type is OK and encouraged but 50% of design must use an existing typeface, not handlettering.
      • Black and White ONLY
      • NO illustrations or graphic elements (shapes, lines, etc)
    • Submit your poster OR book spread as a PDF.
      • Name PDF: LastName_FirstName_Bonus_TypesetContent
  5. Design your own Typeface (30 pts)
    • Final submission needs to include a minimum of ONE of each of the following:
      • Capital Letter
      • Lowercase Letter
      • A letter with an ascender
      • A letter with a descender
      • A letter with a counter or an eye
    • Submit your Typeface in a neat presentation as a PDF.
      • Name PDF: LastName_FirstName_Bonus_Typeface
  6. Redesign A Movie Title (30 pts)
    • Stills ONLY (does not need to animate)
    • Minimum of 3 frames, each 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels:
      • Movie Title
      • Director
      • Additional credit (actor, screenwriter, etc)
    • Inspiration Reference: https://www.artofthetitle.com/
    • Color and graphics OK. NO images. You will be assessed on your use of TYPE.
    • Expressive type is OK and encouraged but 50% of design must use an existing typeface, not handlettering.
    • Submit your stills in a neat presentation as a PDF.
